During the live stream, my computer feed froze and I wasn't able to write this about the battleship Yamato. Both of your grandfathers were on the Philippine islands during WW2. The Yamato was the worlds most powerful battleship of WW2. There are some credible arguments that the American Iowa's were superior but the Yamato was certainly the largest and most heavily armed battleship of WW2. The Yamato was part of a Japanese Imperial Navy task force that was sent to obliterate the men and the ships of landings in Leyte Gulf. Because of a mistake by Admiral Halsey, the main U.S. Navy force protecting the landings were drawn away and the Yamato and other ships were free to approach Leyte. In a segment of the Battle of Leyte called the Battle off Samar, a small group of very tiny U.S. ships (a task force called Taffy 3) attacked the battleship Yamato's force. This was one of the most lopsided battles in naval history but nevertheless Taffy 3 drove the vastly superior Japanese force away, but with great losses. I don't know if either of your grandfathers were at the landings in Leyte Gulf (either on shore or in transport ships) at that time, but if they were and if Taffy 3 hadn't been incredibly heroic, you'd have never been born. If you have time, look up the Battle of Leyte Gulf. It's a fascinating example of extreme heroism (and big mistakes on both sides) during wartime.
