Something I picked up on was the differences between the older children and Kyoko and the sister-in law's relationships with the parents. There was some reference to the father being alcoholic and that he stopped drinking after Kyoko's birth. I think adverse childhood experiences can make a huge difference in adult relationships with parents and possibly the older children may have had a different upbringing than the others who did not see this dynamic at all. I'm not excusing the pettiness they showed, but the beautician and the doctor children seem more detached than the others and there may be a reason for it.
