Yesterday, the owner of a restaurant even sent me a message after my international guests had dinner there.

John- I have been watching your videos for YEARS and have to say, the quality of your videos are now absolutely incredible and professional! I LOVE the coverage of a non-typical location like this and can't wait to get to try the places you highlight when I'm finally able to. They get me so excited to go back to Japan one day because I preferred the "off the beaten path" locations when I was a student in Mishima over a decade ago. I LOVED finding a beetle shop by accident or visiting Mount Hakone and eating an egg out of the volcano while all my classmates seemed a lot more excited about Akihabara (nothing wrong with that, just different preferences :) ). Your enthusiasm for locations like this is exactly what I love, over the trending viral videos. I can't recall- did you have a video about Yamato Koriyama over in Nara (i.e. the Goldfish town)? I'd always thought of going there and was curious if there was more info you had shared!

@RiseKomura3 сағат бұрын
I can't welcome you at Rise's House! Let me share some more information about eel! I heard from a local eel supplier that Nishio-produced eels not only account for 15% of the national market share but are also of exceptional quality. Because of this, they are traded at prices 3-5% higher than those from other major eel-producing regions, such as Kagoshima and Shizuoka. They put in a tremendous amount of effort and time to reduce stress for the eels. For example, the ponds at the eel farms contain mountain stones and river sand. Every year, they go to the mountains and rivers to replace all of it!

It’s good to see the main attractions in a first trip if it’s short, but after 26-27 years living here, Japan is absolutely not all the main cities people visit. I was at a crossroads in 2003 on if I should stay or go so I hitchhiked the whole country from wakkanai to Kagoshima and met 20 incredible people who showed me their hometowns, their country in a most sincere way and I fell on love with Japan. Off the beaten path gives you an experience where good people will take much more interest in you, show you an experience that exceeds your expectations! This was one of those experiences. I think this is why Japan has so many repeaters visiting multiple times. There’s more to see!

I can absolutely relate to this guy’s enthusiasm in introducing his city to tourism. Living in a lesser known city, I keep hearing about the tourist destination next door being overcrowded and even the locals getting xenophobic, meanwhile I barely see any foreigner in my city even though we share many of the culture and charms, and locals that are eager to welcome tourists. There is little we can do to develop tourism if you’re not involved with the government, but things like what this guy does do inspire me.

Kyoto is worth a visit but too many only visit there and the main cities because they don't know about the other places. Expensive, crowded, stressful, overly touristy and feels less authentic in recent years, but I think cutting a Kyoto city visit down to just 1-2 nights is a good idea and spend the other days somewhere else for a more authentic experience. The locals are not as friendly - you can't blame them, they also want to live their lives normally which is harder - so spread the trip out and experience more of Japan's heart and soul.

THANK YOU FOR THIS JOHN!!! WOW!!! You have me sold! I'm MOVING to Japan! lol I would LOVE to visit Nishio but I'm afraid I would fall in love and never leave (is that a bad thing? lol) There is just so much to love about the 'regular, everyday Japan'!! from the food (of course!!) to even the look of the brinks lining the alley... it's just done better in Japan! I've thought about what it would be like moving into a fixer-upper in the Japanese country side and what it would be like to live there everyday... and that does seem a little bit scary... You don't have many choices in pretty much everything when you live in the country (one market, one gas station, one form of public transportation, one neighbor lol) but in a city like Tokyo there can be TOO MUCH (too many choices for dinner, too much noise, too many buildings and not enough nature, too many people) ... but a small city like Nisho is exactly enough... And it really does seem like a little version of Kyoto... I LOVE IT!!! Thank you for showing us such a wonder place! :)
@RiseKomuraКүн бұрын
I love how you put it! think many international visitors tend to go either to big cities or to remote rural areas with nature. That is totally understandable because those are the places Japanese people including me go for sightseeing! Ironically many Japanese can enjoy them because they are different from their regular life. I believe what might be more fun for international communities is something in the middle, which is a small city like Nishio. You can experience a glimpse of how locals live here.

@@onlyinjapan I guess Hamamatsu takes most of the credit when it comes to Unagi. But I'm also tkeeping an eye on local stores here for Nishio-made matcha.

I am from Japan but didn’t know this area you showed. It’s beautiful and would be better for foreigners to experience Japan here than in Kyoto. My son and I went to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima this fall. His favorite place was Hiroshima Geihoku area, where there weren’t many people. His second place was Kyoto Arashiyama area. Kyoto and Tokyo were packed with foreign tourists. These videos showing places like you did would be great to show less crowded nice places to future tourists.

There are many places in Japan that are cheaper and sometimes more interesting. Someday perhaps Nishio will be crowded and we will have to dig even deeper for a new spot

That tearoom is awesome. Ngl, I would put a record player in there with some speakers and just chill to some Japanese jazz at 3am drinking some matcha on a cold winters night.

If he would consider a little tour like he gave you, I would love to go and explore this wonderful city

Just returned from a round trip in Kyushu and it did feel very refreshing to not be shoulder to shoulder with other tourists in Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Beppu and Fukuoka for the most part (there have been sites you still are though of course). Also having been one of few western tourists as most others I encountered have been groups from South Korea and China. Seeing Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka for your first trip to Japan is cool but there are so many other great cities worth a visit.

John, what a wonderful vid after watching a different vid on Kyoto raising the accommodation tax because of over tourism. You are on something here. Have you thought of doing a business of tours featuring unknown and hidden towns like Nishio? The places you visited are what I would like to experience where I can travel and be welcomed and be part of helping such communities yet getting a unique experience at the same time. Only In Japan Tours… I love it ❤
3:55 Gives me some Malcom in the Middle vibes when Hal and Lois realized the cluttered closet was a second bathroom. It's never mentioned ever again.

What does it cost to stay at this inn? Awesome place and is on my bucket list this fall.

All the links are in the description ^_^ it’s a really authentic experience, the fall will be lovely. I went at the start of December to film this, the autumn colors were really nice!
