Tokyo Station can be quite daunting, especially to a first time visitor! For the future. When taking the Tokaido Shinkansen, use Shinagawa Station, and if taking another shinkansen (such as the Tohoku Shinkansen), use Ueno Station. These are still big stations, but they aren't as chaotic as Tokyo Station.
When I wasn't using the JR Pass (no one should anymore after the huge increase of price), I found it easiest to buy at a JR office in the station. Staff speak enough English and are efficient. The luggage situation now is quite a nuisance so, again, station staff probably can handle that too. The big advice I can give anyone is don't ride the Kodama train. It makes all the stops, meaning 4 hours between Tokyo and Osaka. Even if one is about to depart, wait for the Hikari (3hrs at the same price) or Nozomi (2hrs and a little more expensive). There's often 6 trains in total per hour so there's never a need to use the Kodama. A word about stations to first timers: ignore the chaos and follow the signs. Every train and exit and things like a bus station are provided with clear directions.

When i saw you putting your suitcases there i was like: Oh nooo! But I must say: just arrive at the station early, go to the sinkansen counter and just write down what you want to buy (like: 2 reserved seats to Kyoto on the last row) and Translate it in Google Translate and show the person behind the window the Translated text in japanese. Worked out every single time for me personally. Even with more complex situations like my regional jr rail pass exceeding the area it was valid in so I Needed a ticket for a single stretch. Just talking in english and trying to explain stuff like that make the people uncomfortable. But great video, it shows it exactly as it is! 🍻

Tokyo Station is the 8th busiest station in Japan. It is very huge, with 16 exits and an area equivalent to four dome stadiums. If you make a mistake at an entrance exit or a ticket gate, it will be a long way around, so please do not hesitate to ask someone 🎵 If you avoid people who walk too fast and ask someone, they will usually be kind enough to tell you. If you are not in a hurry, they will take you to your destination, and if you are short on time, they will point you to the information center😊 Don't hesitate, don't worry, you will be fine!! Incidentally, Shinjuku Station has the highest number of passengers in the world, followed by Shibuya Station and Osaka Station. The night view from the first car of the Yurikamome is fantastic✨✨ Please take advantage of it for a night stroll and sightseeing!

Let me explain. The person is saying that the space where you guys put your luggage is specifically designated for passengers who have reserved it. I’m not sure if you’ve booked that space, but recently, many locals have been frustrated by tourists, particularly those who don’t research in advance, randomly occupy the space without reservations, preventing paying passengers from using it. If you’re traveling with large luggage, it’s best to either book the luggage storage space on Shinkansen in advance or use one of the convenient luggage delivery services that many tourists find useful.

It’s an experience in itself, how could I not?.. everyone said it’s so easy…even my husband who travels to Tokyo for work every other month. But I just can’t deal with the stress lol. I dunno how many videos I've come across now that call the Nozomi the fastest shinkansen service in Japan. It's by far the most common misconception regarding shinkansen. For reference, the actual fastest shinkansen in Japan, currently, is the Hayabusa Service on the Tohoku Shinkansen, going to Sendai, Morioka, Shin-Aomori and Shin-Hakodate Hokuto. Anyway I'll enjoy the video now cause I can't get enough shinkansen videos! Edit as I've now noticed the 362 km/h you mention at 14:22 I have honestly no idea where you got that number from. Wikipedia lists the top speed at 300 km/h, which is being run on the Sanyo Shinkansen sections between Osaka and Hakata, while the section you were on has a top speed of 285 km/h and you were close to that when you filmed the speedometer app.

I always book the last row because of the luggage. They did mention 'oversize baggage' in the booking page but their meaning of 'oversize' is completely different from flying 😆. Anything larger than a hand carry cabin suitcase would consider oversize. A medium suitcase may still fit the overhead shelf, but I just wouldn't take the risk to put anything over 10KG on top of my head. With increasing number of overseas travellers on Shinkansen this will be a problem they may face, as for now only the last row of each car can fit those larger suitcases and it's getting harder to book.

The concrete elevated structure of the Sanyo Shinkansen was shoddily constructed. The viaduct was constructed without removing the salt from the sea sand mixed with the concrete. As a result, the reinforcing steel in its framework is corroded by salt. As a result, the elevated structure is less susceptible to shaking caused by earthquakes. One of the concrete engineering scholars said ``I don't want to ride the Sanyo Shinkansen if possible.''

There was a record of this happening in Agoda three years ago, but I was able to stay at a convenient hotel for $20, but now I avoid Kyoto. Even middle and high school students on school trips can't stay in Kyoto because it's too expensive. This year, the number of foreigners who visited Japan by December is said to be a record high of 33 million. Kyoto is definitely overtourism, so restrictions are necessary. Wouldn't foreign tourists like to see a more charming Kyoto?

Just so you know for next time, the luggage space at the back of the seats is only reserved for the last row of seats so if you'd like to use that space you'll have to reserve those specific seats beforehand. Same applies for luggage compartment spaces which also needs to be reserved. If you have not made a reservation you will simply have to use the overhead space which can also accommodate pretty large suitcases. Don't fault you for making the same mistakes that tourists commonly make, but they have also been careful in placing plenty of signs around such as on the floor of the luggage area where you originally placed them but now you know!

I’d prefer to travel on Business Class (Green Car) on the Japanese bullet trains, as I’ve heard from other videos that in Japan, Business Class is higher than First Class - at my age, I value my creature comforts and I can only guess that in Business Class, you would have had a Business Class Lounge to wait for your train with an escort to your train as soon as boarding starts - either way, these trains are way better than here in the U.K. where I’ve lived 23 years, where even trains in Eastern Europe and in India and Pakistan are way better than the U.K.

I'm afraid Tokaido Shinkansen finished selling drinks and snacks in trains recently, that's why they started installing Shinkansen coffee vending machines. So, please buy drinks on stations. You took the newest type of train, which has an electric outlet at every seat. Other types have it only at window seats.
@JayandKarolinaАй бұрын
We were very surprised when we realised that you cannot buy any drinks/snacks on board 🧐 Why this rule has come into force? Do you know? The train was just the best! Super clean, fast, and smooth!!!
@ゆうじ-y7bАй бұрын
@ There are several reasons. 1. Drinks in the trains are more expensive than those sold in shops at stations or ordinary vending machines. So, more travellers buy drinks together with Ekiben at stations recently. 2. Shortage of staff & faster speed. As Shinkansen trains are so popular with so many passengers, they leave Tokyo Station almost every 3 to 5 minutes, and are very long with 18 cars, and the speed is getting faster and faster in the past 60 years. So the selling staff need to walk across 18 cars in a shorter time. Due to the decreasing number of new babies born in the past decades, it's difficult to hire so many selling staff. 3. This is my guess. The Central JR is constructing the brand new magnetic floating type Shinkansen between Tokyo and Nagoya, the maximum speed at 500 km/h. To achieve that speed, they need to build relatively straight passage, naturally with many tunnels. There are many tall mountains on the way, so it must be very difficult to dig hard rock mountains. The Central JR had already finished providing news on the over-head display in Shinkansen, and instead they display more advertisements. Many Tohoku Shinkansen trains of JR East have an electric outlet at every seat, but except the newest type of trains that you chose, most Tokaido Shinkansen trains have an outlet only at window seats. I think they need to cut costs as they need a vast amount of money to prepare for the next-generation Shinkansen.
@ゆうじ-y7bАй бұрын
@ But on green cars, you still can buy drinks through mobile phones.
@ゆうじ-y7bАй бұрын
@ Another reason I think of is that because of the Covid, passengers are now accustomed to speak less and eat or drink less in Shinkansen to avoid infections. So the drink and snack sales may be smaller than before. Business travellers may have also decreased thanks to remote working. More than a decade ago, many business travellers used to enjoy drinking a lot of beer and eating snacks while enjoying chatting in Shinkansen after work.

As an American, I fail to comprehend the concept/purpose of scanning your ticket to LEAVE the station. What if you lose your ticket or throw it away, or if your phone battery dies before you get to your final destination, and you don't have your charger with you? Besides, the sole purpose of your ticket is to prove to the conductor and other passengers that you've paid for your seat.
@JayandKarolinaАй бұрын
Yeah haha we totally agree - it's a bit tricky to always remember about collecting your tickets (especially when you're travelling and there's lots of things to remember of). Nobody really checked our ticket on board so maybe it's a double way of checking that you bought the seat on the train but it's not super well-planned...
@vijgai324 күн бұрын
It's nothing new. It's the same in many other countries too. You can't throw away your ticket as ticket checks on board can happen multiple times depending on how far you are going. Hence all locals use the physical or digital card. And the coach has charging points for your phone.

typical foreigners he didn’t even check what the rules were with large luggage before boarding the train. We don’t need any more Shinkansen train videos thanks. And if I do I’d prefer to have Japanese show me around the train than you
@JayandKarolinaАй бұрын
For your information I did somewhat know the rules for large luggage but the official website was not making this clear at all. Hence why Klook have gone out of there way to make it very obvious as many foreigners have issues with this. This comment is very xenophobic which is sad to see.

To the original poster, why are you even watching this if you didn’t want to watch any more foreigners on a shinkansen ? I actually did want to watch it because I recently did this exact trip myself, it’s interesting to watch somebody else’s experience. There are many reasons why people might watch such a video. It’s so rude to make such a stupid comment.
Yes we’ve heard that each Shinkansen you take has slightly different features :) It would be actually nice to compare some of them in the future!

There are a lot of nasty keyboard warriors in Japan. As a fellow Japanese, I find it embarrassing that they write such mean comments. I'm really sorry. your video is very nice. Thank you for sharing. From Japan with love ❤️
Oh, that's so kind of you! Sometimes we do worry that we do something wrong but then we realise that we shouldn't taken the vague negative comments super personally since we're doing our best to show the beauty of Japan + give tips how to travel in the most convenient way :) Thank you so much for watching! We hope you'll enjoy our next videos too!!!
Great video the price of that accommodation was very expensive looking forward to the next video

Glad you enjoyed it! It was kind of crazy and fun in the same time recording this episode but we find the stressful videos for us the most enjoyable for you to watch 😂👍🏼 Kyoto is a very touristy place that’s why the price of the accommodation will be on the pricier side… But we also stayed over the weekend which wasn’t the smartest! Next video will be pretty cool because it will show all the things which made us fall in love with Japan 😍🇯🇵

I feel sorry as a Japanese for several aggressive comments. I know this is a first time to come to Japan for you guys and some rules are hard to understand. I just hope you are enjoying in Japan and come back here again🤝 Pls don’t hate Japan😢
@JayandKarolinaАй бұрын
Thank you for your kind words 🙏🏼 We always try to be respectful and first thing we do is trying to understand the culture and local customs, so we never intend to do anything that doesn't align with local rules intentionally. However, when filming on the go sometimes you can just do things that are not seen as 'good' for some. Anyways, we really loved Japan and we'll be back soon for sure to explore more of its local side!
From the comments we could have seen that people were saying that there’s different companies owning different railways in Japan and they’re having some sort of an argument 😂 So hopefully they’ll manage to come to some sort of conclusion and make a train system that works best for its people 🙏🏼

@@JayandKarolina It's a long shot😭. Japanese organizations just can't seem to create user-friendly IT systems. I used to think the Japan Tourism Agency should take responsibility for building a system that integrates the schedules and bookings for JR companies, private railways, airlines, and bus companies nationwide, but I suppose we should expect vendors like Klook to handle it instead.

I'm not really sure what this comment is about :) It's way more complicated to vlog in public than you think. I think our relationship dynamic is pretty much visible in the video - I like to plan and figure out things before filming but Jay is a really good speaker so he takes over when we're on the go. So I just wanted to clarify that in order to make good content, we need to know our roles and what we're best at too :) [Karolina]
@chalayanАй бұрын
@@danielcrane3648 that is not a nice thing to say. Before they changed the youtube current name, it was Jay who started the channel before Karolina came into the picture. However, none of us have issue with that and also, Jay did mention before Karolina sometimes can be a bit camera shy.
We always like to be informative because we know that lots of people can benefit from watching our videos and make their experiences less stressful in the same time 😍 Glad you enjoyed watching this episode! Thank you for your kind words!

It is dangerous to put suitcases on escalators, so please use the elevator whenever possible.

Japan is covered with JR lines railway, but it is operated by separated company. For example, Tokaido Shinkansen is JR central(東海) Tohoku, Hokuriku Shinkansen and great Tokyo area are every JR east( 東日本) Sanyo Shinkansen and Kansai( Osaka,Kyoto, Nara) are JR west (西日本)lines. It is known for local that JR central and JR east is not good relation That’s why Shinkansen entrance gate is separated. 😅

It all makes sense now! But it was super confusing for us since we did it for the first time haha. Thank you so much for advising us 🙏🏼
@knightofzodiacАй бұрын
The rules for oversized luggage storage behind the seats on the Shinkansen are really confusing. The English-language sign that says you are not allowed to leave luggage is hard to see, and if you do leave luggage, the sign is hidden. So I think JR should change it. This makes it difficult for people other than those who are accustomed to using the Shinkansen to understand. On the other hand, it is true that many Japanese are disgusted by the many foreigners who think they can do anything they want because they have respect and acknowledgement. Many such people do not face the fact that the standards of respect and gratitude differ from culture to culture. They insist only on the logic of themselves and those who appreciate the information, and do not care about the discomfort of those who are unwillingly caught up in it, and in fact sometimes deny the feelings of such people. Incidentally, in a narrow aisle space such as the Shinkansen, if you block the aisle for even one second for any reason other than an unavoidable cause or a sudden accident that could happen to anyone, your action is considered a nuisance in Japanese values. And a “Arigatou” to a stranger may be considered rude because it implies that you are in a higher position than the stranger. The proper words to say are “Arigatougozaimasu” or “Sumimasen".In this case, it is “Sumimasen". Well, most Japanese would think it's inevitable because they are foreigners about it. Japanese is a language in which the words you should use change depending on your relationship with the other person, but unfortunately, that is not included in most guidebooks.

Rather than hauling your suitcases around with you, next time consider using Japan's incredibly convenient takuhaibin luggage forwarding services. When I was there a couple of months ago, the morning before travelling to the next accommodation I would hand over my suitcase to the staff, provide the address, they'd weigh it (≤25kg only, I learnt the hard way), I'd pay the fee (very reasonable), and sure enough I'd see it again at the next place. And of course that's if you even care about the suitcase being available immediately when you arrive; I kept all my essentials on my person. When travelling between Tokyo/Osaka and Aomori I gave it 2 days just to be safe, but I think my luggage still arrived in a single day which is incredible. It's available at any hotel, but if staying at a place without a reception I believe you can arrange for the company to pick it up, or you could do it at any major railway station or konbini.
@JayandKarolinaАй бұрын
This is such an amazing option! There’s was a women on the train who told us about this possibility and next time we would use it 100%!!! What’s the name of the service? Or how to book it online? Thank you sooo so much!!!

@@JayandKarolina The takuhaibin service everyone seemed to be using was Yamato Transport's takkyubin (aka TA-Q-BIN) but I'm sure there are others. I'm afraid I've never used their website as I always had the reception staff take care of it, but if you do a quick Google search for them their English site comes up. :)

Note that this is the fastest Shinkansen on the Tokaido-Sanyo line running between Tokyo and Hakata. The Hayabusa, running north from Tokyo to Aomori, is faster in terms of top speed by 20kph.

But, as Murakami Haruki put it in “Dance, Dance, Dance”, the faster the speed, the more headway into boredom.
