There are other guides for sure, including the professors. What I couldn't find was the tips on number of card draw, removal and such. It might be that I didn't look hard enough, but it just seemed as everyone knew these numbers but the wasn't a place where you could learn about it

@@joeylras You shouldve dug into the Command Zone's catalogue of content. Theyve done a couple videos on general building tips including general suggestions for card proportions (ie. ~8 sources of artifact ramp, ~5-6 removal, etc...). Those numbers are usually a good place to start and can be tweaked once you're more comfortable with building decks depending on what the goal of the deck is, the way you pilot the deck and who your commander is (not to suggest you're not comfortable with building decks now, just more of a general point for other noobs who may come across this comment).

When other people show me their decklist asking for advice, I'm often shocked at their low land count. It really is a common misconception that signets and elves count towards land count. Back when I Tumblrd and was building my first EDH decks I was an avid follower of The 8x8 Theory (I think that was its name). Essentially you have your Commander, 36 lands plus 8 categories of 8 cards. I'd typically go, Draw, Ramp, Removal, Utility, plus whatever 3 or 4 themes the deck was built around. It's not the most sure fire way to build a deck, but it made finding the 99 cards less daunting and the overall deck more focused for a beginner. Also Gatherer is a great search tool for deck building, I'm on there right now building a Sedris Zombie Tokens deck. You put in your rules text keywords plus color, card type, etc. In my case "Zombie Tokens" and Not "Green White". The comments got shut off before M15 came out but there's a wealth of player knowledge in there too.

Understanding "Beginning of the next end phase" is the key to sneak attack-like cards. It's where purphorous really shines, since you can do a bunch of stuff at the end of your opponents turn and then do a bunch more on your turn, meaning the trigger won't take place until the beginning of your turn. Great card...

I was JUST looking for something like this yesterday. This turned out to be exactly what I needed: a breakdown of how much land/ramp/removal/etc. I should have, along with how to use (the somewhat daunting) EDHREC.

This video is top notch. I will be giving it to new players as a starting point. I believe that you have upped the base knowledge of the entire commander format.

I've built a couple decks, but not only did I learn a lot here, I found a new card to add to one of them! Good work Professor!

I've been playing Commander on and off for years now but I still watched the video because Prof has insight I may have not had. Thanks for all your hard work.

Thank you! I have been wanting to build a Simic creature deck that involves Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle, Kruphix, Zegana, and Tatyova but having issues using Edhrec... NOW I see how to use it properly!

I just started playing magic this week(at 28 years old lmao) and I am completely hooked. Have played Pokémon and yugioh but I feel as though magic is just different. I bought two precondition but I cannot wait to get enough cards to be able to build my own. I have been watching this channel pretty much non stop since I decided to start playing lol

How i build. 1) Pull a legendary card from a pack that i don’t currently have a deck similarly built. 2) go through a few dozen binders and pull out every single card that synergizes with that commander. 3) pull out 10 each ramp, draw, and removal cards from a seperate binder. Cut a few if the cards that synergize fill those roles. 4) spend the next week hmming and hawing and cutting a pile of 100-200 synergy cards down to 30. 5) ignore the pile of unused cards till the stack is about to fall over and need to be put back in binders. Or start a new pile......

Super helpful. I took up magic in the middle of this dumb pandemic. Your videos have helped to fill the void of a good playgroup to learn from. Thank you.

Thank you for a great video. Your videos are entertaining, informative and you are an awesome presenter. I bought my first Magic cards recently. I like winter, snow and all that goes with them. I bought two Kaldheim draft booster packs and soon after bought a draft booster box. I have a lot of cards now. I asked the store owner what was most commonly played and he told me Commander. So, I'm putting together my first deck. Finding this video and watching it, a number of times, has been very valuable. I am not clear though on whether I need 100 cards or 101 cards (including the commander) as the rule appears unclear. Thanks for your time!

I know im probably a bit later to this video but I am about to have a friend over today to help build my first deck so i can join in on his MTG nights. This video was really helpful in giving me resources and a base understanding of what I should look for. I dont have a ton of cards but i think hes going to bring his and let me have anything he doesnt need himself and that i could use. but still this video was helpful to understanding a bit more what i need to consider when building the deck

I opened a Prerelease kit and pulled an alt-art Vadrok, then proceeded to build a deck out of it with spare parts. It actually ran quite well in testing. Having good inspiration is quite helpful.
