I remember the greatest trick ever pulled on an oathbreaker pod. There was a Jace, Wielder of Mysteries paired with Treasure Hunt that just played as a mono blue control list, using the hunt to always refuel into something to do. One day they came in with the same deck and played super reserved for every game. Finally after holding on to their Oathbreaker for a round and making no enemies cast Treasure Hunt turn 5 to reveal the entire deck was Islands the whole time, winning the game.

Oathbreaker is thriving in our LGS. What we learned is there is nothing too broken. If the combo is too obvious, you get focused down really fast. 20 life is not enough to survive a 3 pronged assault.

This is so true! That is how the Izzet player went down in our Oathbreaker competition. They bragged about how they had a infinite combo with their Planeswalker and Signature spell and proceeded to get crushed by the other 3 players before they could do anything and than they left in a salty huff, haven't seen them since at FNM. Good riddance if your going to get that annoyed ;P LOL

With only 20 life, how do you manage aggressive go-wide decks that just ignores their commanders altogether and just goes face from turn 1?
@warldworZ
@warldworZ Жыл бұрын
@@xxhellspawnedxx I haven't played the format but I'm guessing it runs into the same issue as aggro commander decks. You might be able to kill one, maybe two players with a low to the ground aggressive strategy, but the remaining player(s) will have a lot of time to build up their board or wipe yours in that time-frame.

@@mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299 how many games were in that sample? i had all the cards for ral deck so i put it together for a test and in four games total i dropped one to opponents having multiple counters. this decks averages slightly below turn 3 so its hard for aggro to do much unless its very low curve and those builds (as mentioned) manage to kill one player and run out of steam and get killed by remaining two. people dont play such decks. i disassembled the deck afterwards to try something more interesting. i ported legacy d&t to oathbreaker since i cannot play those cards in commander.
@xxhellspawnedxx
@xxhellspawnedxx Жыл бұрын
@@warldworZ I don't know about that tbf. If it were 40 life a piece, or even 30, I'd be inclined to agree, but with 20? I mean, in commander you'd knock one player out pretty comfortably (40 life), and then be hated out by the other two (resource disadvantage 1:2). In Oathbreaker, you'd do the same 40 damage, and you'd have knocked two players out, leaving only one opponent left to deal with you, i.e. no advantage in terms of resources, and your strategy will be steaming along on highest gear at that point. But perhaps the entire format, by necessity, is more reactive than EDH? More removal, more stax, more control effects, to buffer that low life total?

Grist the hungering tide is absolutely a broken combo if you want it to be. Run 12 lands (3 swamps, 9 forests) and everything else as insects, and hard mulligan for 2 lands including a forest. You could get it after 1-2 mulligans comfortably. You cast rites of spring on turn 2, discarding 5-7 cards, searching out 5-7 lands, including at least 1 swamp. You have 3-5 lands left in your deck tops, and 5+ cards that should be predominantly be creatures in your discard as well. You then play your swamp, and summon grist. You then activate the first ability, and will mill about 6-8 insects on average before you mill one of your lands. You create a silly number of blockers as you do this as well. You just repeat until you have 20 insects in grave (something that shouldn't take too long), then use the ultimate for game. If you have 10 insects in grave, and no-one has clear heal, and you have a loyalty of 10+ from your turn 3 mill, you can just ultimate over two turns and win. You can just make your mills even more consistent by cutting your land count more. End of the day all you need to do is have 2 lands in opening hand, and after you cast rites of spring, still have 1-2 lands in the deck to avoid a deckout. It would just make the mulligans more high-rolly

The Oathbreaker + Spell combo I've been using ever since I learned of the format is Nissa, Stweard of Elements + Brainstorm. She's fun for a sort of creaturey control deck where Brainstorm compliments her nicely by stacking the top your deck with a creature/land that was in your hand that Nissa can put into play for free or use her +2 to scry away the cards you put back with Brainstorm if you had no good options nor a fetch land to shuffle them away.

During the first go-around for Oathbreaker, I made a [Vraska, Golgari Queen] + [Reanimate] deck that was Sliver tribal that had a heavy sacrifice and revive influence. This go-around, I made two decks. I made a [Sivitri, Dragon Master] + [Feign Death] Dragon Tribal as my "slower" deck. My other deck for faster play was [Huatli, Warrior Poet] + [Fight as One]. It is a low cost deck focusing on making or casting a bunch of small creatures and pump them up with combat tricks.

I had built 2 oathbreaker decks when the format first came out, (I had heard about it just after War of the Spark) so I will describe these decks, as both were a lot of fun. One of my decks was Domri, Anarch of Bolas as the 'breaker, and Cultivate as the signature spell, with a deck full of Chandras (yeah, similar to the Proffessor's number 1 deck, this was actually Chandra tribal) and Elementals. I'd drop Domri on turn 5, and use his mana to Cultivate. Domri and Cultivate really were just used for ramping out the Chandras, and distilling my deck, and the elemental package brought creatures like Chandra's Embercat, Flamekin Harbinger, and Incandescent Soulstoke as well as some big boys like Cloudthresher. Changeling Titan and Berserker would let me use Soulstoke to save creatures and pull off some interesting combat tricks. It didn't win that often, but it was great to play. The other deck was a mono-green Nissa Revane as Oathbreaker with Elvish Promenade as the signature spell. (I'd use Elven Ambush now, but this was before that card existed, so it worked at sorcery speed.) It would flood the board with cheap elf mana dorks, as well as cards that cared about the number of elves, including Elvish Guidance, Marwen the Nurturer, Priest of Titania, Wirewood Channeler, and Elvish Archdruid, (Circle of Dreams Druid would also go in, if I rebuilt it now.) Priest of Titania's mana would cast Elvish Promenade and double the number of elves, then use Wirewood Channeler or Seeker of Skybreak (or whatever) to cast the Promenade one or two more times and end up with an irresponsible number of elves. After the elf count would get out of hand, I'd use Nissa's 2nd +1 and gain loads of life. At that point, my opponents would frequently have an issue dealing with my life total and board. Even when they had a boardwipe, I could usually live through several swings and rebuild my board faster than anyone else. If they didn't boardwipe, I'd maybe Promenade once or twice more for good measure, and use an anthem like Joraga Warcaller or Overrun to close out games. Since Oathbreaker players don't have easy access to "21 commander damage" to kill opponents, I had figured an Oathbreaker focused on life gain might be pretty strong, and it definitely was.

I had a couple of oathbreaker game with my friends, two of them when immediately for what would be a highly optimize commander deck with combos in the signature spell zone, and me and my other friend when for goblins and white weenies respectively...and we just kill them before they could go off! It's easy to overlook the fact that 20 life is way less than 40, but the amount of time that takes away from you compare to commander really matters, and it allows for more low to the ground decks to be an honest threat.

I used to love Oathbreaker. I built a Karn, Scion of Urza deck and jammed all of the swords into it. I called it Robots With Swords. The spell was a tough choice as there weren't many options at the time. I settled on Warping Wail as a way to hopefully counter other spells in the zone, and put All is Dust into the deck as it wasn't much fun in the command zone when I tried it.

I’m quite proud of my oathbreaker brew of Elminster and Mystic Reflection; I scry to find a huge spell in my library, which makes my spells much cheaper, and then I use his minus 3 to exile a huge cmc spell creating that many 1/1s… but wait! I use mystic reflection to turn all those 1/1s into something bigger and spicier! It’s genuinely the most fun I’ve had brewing since very early on in my commander career, and it’s such a perfect pairing.

There are just some combos that should result in you getting burned out by the table on principle alone--for example, Teferi, Time Raveler and Mana Drain.

I have a few different Oathbreakers built already. 1.Gideon of the Trials w/ Angel's Grace 2.Lolth w/Deadly Dispute 3.Arlin Kord w/Kari Zevs Expertise So far there's very little interest in my area for oathbreaker but that's why I have multiple decks and build more whenever I have extra cards on hand to do so.

I built a Garruk, Cursed Huntsman + Culling Ritual deck and it's basically just big golgari beaters with no permanents in the deck that are 2 cmc or less. I absolutely love it, and it's a great time when I'm not fighting against someone who's put something heinous in their spell slot.

I'm a big fan of Kaya, Geist Hunter plus Benevolent Offering. Because of her token doubling you always get more value than whoever you choose to also get the spirits, and the life gain really helps against more aggressive decks. Good amount of a politics lean while also being able to overrun the opponent pretty well.

we made a house rule called "planeswalker summoning sicknes" so you cannot use your signature spell until your next upkeept. Being this a multiplayer game, it shuts down broken planes/signature combos, as any on the table is an instant removal of the planeswalker. This alone encouraged the use of clever signature spells, but better all around planeswalkers not looking for a broken card combo.

My favorite personal brew for Oathbreaker is Liliana of the Dark Realms + Bubbling Muck. The deck is essentially a mono black “swamps matter” ramp deck that wants to get tons of swamps, then double the mana they make with Bubbling Muck to spend into massive payoffs.

I haven't had a chance to properly play it yet, but my first Oathbreaker deck is B.O.B. I had High Tide as the signature spell at first before finding out it was banned, so now it's Artifical Evolution. Why? Because my wincon is Graaz, and changing it to say Beeble instead of Juggernaut beefs up the B.O.B. One day I'll play a proper oathbreaker game, only done some 1v1 testing against my gf

3 major problems with oathbreaker that really turned me off of the format: 1. Cards that add counters like proliferate etc, makes planeswalkers get emblems and the like far to quickly and easily and just win within a few turns with no setup. 2. Planeswalkers that just win the game with their big loyalty minus, a lot of planeswalkers need only one or two turns and then just win if they hit the table which means a ton of your deck has to be devoted to removal and with only 60 cards it feels a bit limiting. 3. Planeswalkers with static abilities, they just without a doubt do so much more inherintly broken things than those who do not especially the ones that have all the 2 previous problems to back them up. Without these things oathbreakers becomes a damn near perfect format.

The thing about Oathbreaker is a lot of the best planeswalkers to use already have "this can be used as commander" on them, because they've been designed specifically as build around cards. So why not just play commander?

My deck is Sarkhan the Mad & Shallow Grave. As many 4 mana or less Dragons as I can handle. Wait to play Sarkhan till I have a good # of Flying Flame Lizards then summon my walker, play Shallow Grave to get another Lizard, Ult Sarkhan to burst someone down, then swing in with the lot against whoever is still standing. Almost every dragon is competitively stated so everyone feels powerful. Love it so much, very fun, many dragons.

IMO, Oathbreaker has the same problem as Tiny Leaders did, it's too limited and too competitive for a casual format to be fun enough for mass adoption. Unlike Commander, you can't rely on social convention to manage the cardpool and self regulate, it needs some serious ban list updates to keep all the broken stuff in check.

Surprisingly, Liliana of the Veil and Deadly Rolick has been a bread n butter deck for me. Exile dangerous threats, remove cards from everyone elses hands and play aristocrat/tax effects is fun, even if it paints a bullseye on your forehead. Otherwise, Dakkon Shadowlslayer and the surprisingly effective Open the vaults/soulguide lantern combo has won me a couple games.

I always enjoyed Xenagos + Tempt with Vengence. Turns out having a Gaea's Cradle and a spell that makes X 1/1s in the command zone is absolutely crazy. You can then win with Witty Roastmaster, Purphoros, Impact Tremors, Hellrider, or a Bushwhacker. If all else fails you just use any overrun effect to go wide and tall.
