Despite it being legal for Modern, it doesn't sound like it was designed to impact Modern. Just was given a pass to be sure it would be fine (not broken) in Modern. "The set was mostly playtested in Commander (it was this playtesting that convinced Corey of commanders needing to be part of freerunning), but there were Modern consultants who took a pass at the set. When I interviewed Corey for this article, he told me the story of how he convinced the consultants who came in to work on Modern Horizons 3 to look at Assassin's Creed."

This seems likely. Nobody should be buying this set unless this is your favorite IP. Even then you should just buy the secret lair cards. Yet I still see some 'influencers' talking about how this set is worth picking up because they're trying to get rid of product. MTG is in a really sad state. The influencers are basically direct to consumer wholesellers at this point.

Calling it a "medium set" really, really bugs me more than it should. It bugs me because it's really transparently marketing spin--like the Professor says, WotC probably had to scramble--to try and make the set sound bigger than it actually is. It's also trying to imply that the normal/full-sized sets we get are somehow large, as well. It's really blatant manipulation of expectations and, I suspect, a way for WotC to try and lay groundwork to get customers to expect to pay more for fewer cards later, or, perhaps, pump the prices on larger sets even more in future. Just, the dichotomy of trying to call one thing "medium," and another thing "full-sized," frustrates me; either something is the average, medium size, which should also be the full size, or it is less or more than that.

Ok, I don’t hate the AC series, if it hadn’t been entirely spoiled right on the heels of MH3 release I probably would have been stoked for it. But as it is, I didn’t give it much attention and really don’t intend to get it. I’m a commander player and even with the new designs, nothing screamed “build me” out of the set. Even in the secret lairs my wife expressed a mild interest in Edward Kenway and I said “You mean Admiral Beckett Brass?” To which she then groaned, “Oh, it’s not a new card?” I know some people are gonna be hot for this set and not to be much of an echo chamber for Prof here but if so, BUY SINGLES. 5 bucks for 7 cards is really just not worth it.

Japan does a lot of 5 card Boosters, including in Duel Masters the MTG Spinoff and they can be absolutely fine, but there's a big difference in cost and whatnot.. Duel Masters has Draft, you bring 6 packs and open 2 packs a time to draft from, obviously means they need to design the sets slightly differently for the higher density of rares and you get 30 cards to make your deck from instead of 45, but that's just a design difference. I think the big reason that it comes off so different is that Duel Masters from Takara prices their boosters at like 200 yen per pack or 5000yen for a box (about $30-50 depending on exchange rate) It means a box is a more approachable product to buy and really the only loss is you get less Common/Uncommons, since a box of 30 packs gives you 30 Rare ( or higher) and only 120 C/U, less bulk if you're just cracking packs for fun. If a 24 pack box of Assassins Creed Boosters cost like $50, it would hit a lot different.

​@@anthonyconvery4331There has always been the implication that, since some Magic cards have more monetary value than others, having to buy randomized packs is akin to gambling. It's certainly worse than loot boxes in videogames, since the effort to liquidise the assets in their case is much greater, and the gambling commission has already come after those. The defence that TCGs used has always been that the randomization exists for the purposes of playing sealed format, so the packs are a kind of gaming piece with distribution guided by gameplay concerns, and any swings in monetary value are an unfortunate effect of the format. This defense doesn't work with random packs that aren't meant to be drafted (or at least played in limited-like environments, like Jumpstart). So this defense wouldn't hold it the gambling commission decided to check it out. Of course, set boosters weren't meant to be drafted either and were built to be a permanent new format of sale, so I don't think Wizards is too concerned about that

My only disagreement is that I don't think this was a pivot at *all.* While we didn't know what Beyond Boosters were until the big Aftermath L stream, the product name WAS dropped when Assassin's Creed was first announced. I believe that Beyond Boosters were always meant to be like this, and it was brought up in the stream to get ahead of videos just like this one. Given the briefness of previews and an even less hyped debut stream than Fallout, I think WOTC is calling this a wash. The question that raises is WHY? Why did they ever think this would work. To answer that, I think we have to look outside of Magic and to other games, particularly Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh, games that not only don't have draft formats to begin with but also regularly sell 5-8 card supplemental set boosters.

Prof literally talks about the retooling they did, aka putting 20 reprints in to bloat the amount of cards. He never implied that AC wasn't meant to be smaller pack sized. The contrary is true, considering he mentioned that both products were in development at the same time. Plus...Pokemon? You are aware that Pokemon has 10 cards per pack, always. Except for special packs (Halloween comes to mind) and those always cost LESS than regular packs. Usually half to a third.

Imagine if WotC would've actually done a COOL choice and made pseudo-mystery boosters out of these small sets. Imagine; 15-card mystery boosters where at least a third is guaranteed to be the the Universes Beyond Cards, and the other are JUST reprints from sets based on things like The List. It would offer fun draft experiences for all players, give opportunites to get chase cards where, wait for it, there would be incentive even for people not interested in the releasing universes beyond cards would still have interests in the cards. And the set boxes wouldn't even need to be sized at 24, we've seen so many succesful 24 booster sets. But let's be fair, this is WotC, making consumer-positive choices that would help the long-term longevity of the game but not immediately fatten their pockets is not a set of choices one can expect of them. This novel idea isn't even something anyone from WotC will ever be able to see let alone consider, at least no one who can actually make a change.

They probably *can’t*. There’s no way UB is going to allow non-AC cards in their AC set. And they honestly shouldn’t. It hurts their branding to dilute it, even though it’s more consumer friendly. Wizards isn’t going to be able to renegotiate without UB and they have an interest in not doing so.

To be fair, this profit chasing is probably being dictated by Hasbro. WOTC is the only thing they own that made any profit last year, everything else failed. So now they have to make even more money to try and prop up a spiraling company. It sucks, but the only way out is either for WOTC to buy themselves out or to wait until Hasbro dies and then get bought by someone else.

I have yet to buy a box since then, but the inner kid in me is VERY excited about this. I am probably the only person that is excited about this. Yes, aftermath/beyond boosters are a scammy yet we have been paying for something similar to them already. Modern Horizons and Double Masters packs are/were 10+, Double Masters 2 were 20+, collector boosters, etc. Instead of doubling the price they halved the cards, keeping the cards per (insert currency) the same. Scammy? Yes. But we all have shown WotC that we are willing to pay, and they will cash in.

WotC is realizing the impact of overprinting on the secondary market. Most of the serialized cards like the doctors sit on the shelfs, while right now even some superart printings in nonfoil miss value, since there are so many foil altart cards on the market, thanks to collector boosters. Less cards per pack means less cards on the market, which makes LGS owners and collectors happy.

A friend of mine has just recently started to play magic and, not wanting to curb his enthusiasm, I'm talking with him a lot about all the new cards and spoilers. One month into Magic, he was positively excited for everything, spent hours analysing new cards and sets and decks. Two months in, he was starting to feel some fatigue, especially because we both work a lot and don't have time to watch all livestreams and stuff. @@neros_soren I sincerely think we’ll revisit 40k in the future. They just left so much on the table creatively that it had to be intentional. Leaving out the Tau is one thing, but entirely omitting the Eldar and Orks is another.

Interesting video. I've been getting into Grand Archive TCG and so far that game has had 2 sets (of 4 released) featuring 8 card boosters. The first set had issues, the set size was too small and it was overprinted. The creators took these lessons to heart and the second set featured a much larger card pool (191 in total). I picked 8 booster boxes of that set and came away with complete playsets of the Commons and uncommons, as well as plenty of playsets of the rare cards. Overall, felt satisfied. In that context, 7 card boosters sourcing from a set of 100 cards seems....iffy.

Seems like you can roughly divide the size of the set by 10, and that's their target booster size. Increasing the booster size relative to the set size increases the chance a player will get the card they want, and reduces the chance of reroll.

Assassin's Creed seems like they wanted it to be a full set like LotR but they couldn't actually think up of enough cards to make it a full set so they just made this half-ass "mini set" and called it a day.

Given how much lore, characters, and content is in the AC series, I cannot believe that they couldn't have made more cards/products for this set. Even having only played half of the games, I'm pretty sure I could've come up with more than ONE TEMPLAR KNIGHT for the entire set in a series driven by the power struggle between The Brotherhood of Assassins and The Templar. I mean, holy $#!t, I know the series is called Assassin's Creed, but there's more to the game than just assassins. We don't even have the assassination targets as cards. It would be like producing a Hitman set and only making Agent 47 and gadget cards.

I appreciated the detail in mentioning the cost of publishing sets using other IPs, since there are absolutely financial considerations of publishing (card form or otherwise) another company's intellectual property. I also appreciated you mentioning what LOTR sets are selling for NOW, vs, say, at launch, or other "older" examples. Not only is it more 1:1 in terms of inflation, but clearly shows the difference between just wanting stuff to be cheaper "cuz" and WOTC's business decisions in a more objective light. While I don't see there being anything wrong with a business putting out products to test the waters (since, of course, people can choose to simply not buy them, thus making it a financial flop) these kinds of videos are great for ensuring people who want to do their due diligence understand what kinds of MTG purchases are going to get them the most bang for that buck. I'm looking forward to buying singles and letting someone else get this medium set's bulk out into the secondary market for me cuz nahhhh I'm good on this haha. Normally I get one box and go from there, but not for this one.

What's funny is when I see someone say 'oh it has good reprints like Rest in Peace, Royal Assassin, Assassin's Trophy and the MH1 lands', those are all worth like a buck dude. You're paying something like $1 per card for bulk to hope to hit a $1 rare. The set has 4 cards, the 2 swords and Temporal Trespass + Black Market Connections and maybe a couple of commander relevant new cards. Those 4 cards are going to tank in value thanks to this set, which is great. But it means even less reason to open it. You'll be able to get the 2 rares for $6-7 in a few weeks and the swords will be under $15.

It was mentioned either on Blogatog or in an official announcement that Aftermath didn't do so hot so they won't be doing packs like that again, but that Assassin's Creed was far enough along that they couldn't redesign the approach to its distribution. It'd be tough to justify doing a Thunder Junction and seed normal packs with the cards when there's 100+ of them, not to mention the licensing deal that was probably expecting a front billing kind of product. Personally I think Aftermath-esque packs not doing so great is a slight shame, since folks often skip over the commons anyway, but I can't argue that it just makes sense to feel ripped off paying the same amount for less stuff, even if that less stuff isn't typically worth anything. Can't fight psychology.

I have found, in some cases that buying singles of the cards I actually need may go close to the price of a full box but then Im not stuck with a bunch of cards I dont need or will ever use. I like to view the Collector Booster Packs as having the basic lands taking up a rare slot. Without the land, you can get 4 or 5 rares, but with the basic land in a pack, you can only get 4 rares.

i got an AC collector booster from Magiccon Amsterdam. had 2 the same 4 mana bounce all nonhiostoric permanents spells in it. so repetition in packs still there.

I think a better way to handled something like Aftermath would be to have the cards included in the next few sets's packs. Like you'd get 1 aftermath card in every pack of the next 3 sets. So that way it's not just technically part of the other set, and it feels like an epilogue. Also wouldn't have to bloat the mini set, and it's just like added value to other sets.

The magic number 7 made me wonder if there is some absurdly expensive "turbo sealed" format you could play with these cards where instead of a library you have a pile of these booster packs, and every turn you open one to be your hand.

The Doctor Who model seemed to be the best. Commander decks (which these AC cards are really clearly intended for anyway), with collectors boosters for folks that want to bling them out.

Agreed. These things are probably locked into contracts a year or more in advance, but hopefully they’ll go back to the Doctor Who model. I know it wasn’t the most popular set, but it was structured well.

Do remember that these sets are usually in development for years, so by the time prior experiments bank or bust, the second experiment is already too deep in design to back out. This is not advocating for or defending this product, just explaining why we got it the way we did.
