I go winter car camping in the woods with my new InstaFire Vesta Heater & Stove. I had to shovel a lot of snow to get into this spot. This is my first time van camping with this new Instafire vesta heater and I was very impressed with the heat it put off and how well it cooked food/boiled water. I don't know if I would call it an extreme cold night, but it definitely was freezing temperatures overnight and the Instafire vesta heater kept us very warm. I may start using the Instafire vesta more often on even extremely cold nights while winter car camping in my campervan.

I have two of those heater/stoves. the fan will turn even with 1 canned heat going. It uses the same stuff that cooks use for food service and it is very safe to use inside. I used the heater with 1 can to help keep my bedroom warm in an old draft house to supplement the furnace. These things work great and you can cook with it. I found for a 8 inch frying pan it's best to use at least 2 cans. I love my little heater/camp stove. It also works great for power outages. Love your set up and the night walk. Very cool. Enjoy camping with your daughter. They grow up way too fast.

I'm going to check into this, I was considering a $2K installed Planar diesel heater. For as much as I will ever use it, this may do the trick and save space.

Nice video! It looks like you both had fun and is such a peaceful spot to car camp! Thanks for showing us the Vesta heater it looks much safer than a propane heater and probably doesn't give off fumes like propane does. Make sure you always have healthy snacks on hand like nuts or peanut butter because anytime you're shoveling snow it's like doing a workout . May God keep you and your family healthy and safe!

I definitely agree on needing some quick healthy snacks. I just didn’t eat enough or drink enough water that day, once I sat down with some food and water I felt much better.

Nice to see your daughter camping with you. When my kids were young, my wife ran a Girl Scout troop and my son and I would go on the camp outs with our own tent. We had a huge 10 person tent for the girls and two moms. The campfires, skits, hikes were epic. Hope you and your wife can take your daughter and a friend camping in the summer - it is a blast. So happy to see others have found this gem of a heater. I bought it about a year ago on Amazon with no reviews but its been my go-to heater for camping. In the car or in a tent. It's been such an amazing little heater to have.

I can't wait to go camping with my nephew. His parents are not outdoor people so it was cool that his first experience of sleeping outside (in a tent) got to be with Auntie ❤️ it's nice to get ideas of what to do with kids camping

Looks like y'all had a good trip! That heater is a good piece of kit to have for emergencies. I have one, and it puts out a decent amount of heat. I can heat a small room with 2 cans in it. Cooking is ok, but it's more for warming food than actually cooking. I feel it is worth picking one up, along with extra chafing cans.

I think I would have to put down either a tarp or an outdoor rug just to keep from tracking snow/dirt etc to a minimum. Other than that pretty cool!

Cool. Remember, any flame consumes Oxygen, most emit carbon monoxide. And don't fall asleep with engine running, where it might snow, build up around ur van causing exaust issue. Love it. Love it.

Hey Matt, great video did you ever make the kitchen sink while camping? It's fried potatoes with onions and peppers and either kabasi or hotdogs you add in halfway through cooking potatoes. Then when potatoes and meat and veggies are done, whisk up scrambled eggs with salt and pepper and pour that all over the fried potatoes in the pan cover the lid and let it sit five minutes with the heat off. Turn the heat back on and add shredded cheddar or you can use Velveeta or American slices and put the lid back on just till the cheese melts. This is an excellent meal and very filling and the kids even love it.

@@TolbersCamping it's really easy. I use a slicer called a mandolin to slice the potatoes all perfectly evenly thin so they cook really fast and you just turn the burner on medium-high and about every five to ten minutes you have to flip the potatoes after about 15 minutes you add in your peppers and onions and hotdogs. Continue cooking until dawn and then add your scrambled eggs and put the lid on till the eggs are cooked, then put your cheese over top and throw in about a quarter cup of water and that will help your cheese melt and it will evaporate. Let me know if you make it. 😋

You could probably get some Mylar survival sheets and staple them to the inside of your tarps and have all that heat you’re making reflect back to you.

Just found your videos, I'm getting through them. I like how you just an ordinary average guy like the rest of us. Just shows you don't need one of those really expensive Mercedes high roofs and gourmet food to have a good time camping in the van and whatnot. Look forward to going through your catalog of videos, I myself got old '80s Chevy van and you have given me A lot of insight on how you keep yours warm and cold so I can do it with mine.

Nice job. Would suggest blocking off area under van door to eliminate draft coming in from under van.

block both sides to save heat inside the van, but becareful of exhaust being blocked if it snows more.

That was fun ! Super Bowl in the Sticks !!! ..and Comfy too. I'm glad you tested the Vesta in a van. I didn't get one yet because the results for cooking & heat in a small room in a house are less impressive, but the minimal space of a car seems to be more of it's sweet spot. I will probably still use faster methods for the cooking tasks but for an overnight heater it looks good ,...I'd like to see the difference in humidity vs a Mr Buddy. Peace !!

I’d say ceiling height is going to be a big factor when comparing a van to a small room. A small bathroom would definitely be warm but a small bedroom it will only probably warm it up a few degrees.

I hope people know to have plenty of fresh air when using those type of unvented stoves. Carbon monoxide can kill you quickly. With the bottom of the minivan open, I don’t think this guy has anything to worry about, plus he has a CO detector.

I use a extra tarp to help hold heat in, especially around the cracks. Inside the van the heat with run you out. Love those stoves!

so it was 70 degrees and overnight till 6am --ish.. it was still on. and only dropped 20 degrees. that is awesome.

That's a pretty decent setup you got. I'm saving up to get a sun fun kits 4.0kwh battery to build a small portable power unit. You could save quite a bit by refilling those used fuel cans with 90% isopropyl alcohol. It's much cheaper than paying around $2 or more per 6 hour unit.

You don't want to use isopropyl alcohol it creates nasties didn't burn cleanly these units are usually filled with ethanol or methanol or a mixture of the 2 they burn really clean

WARNING - Do not attempt this with a trangia alcohol burner. I did this. I got over 600 degrees. Melted the handles right off the stove. Was quite difficult to put out all three trangia alcohol burners. Way way to high of a flame for the Vesta stove.

I would get some fabric and velcro and make a skirt to go the length under the sliding door to stop the cold air coming from under the van.

When I was a truck driver and later,when living in my car, I kept mini moos to add to my hot tea .They'd work in hot chocolate,too. They don't need refrigeration, and they are real half and half .little creamers

Sterno gives off more CO than other heat sources so it's a good idea to vent when using it

Thank you for demonstrating the stove heater. It would be nice if there was a skirt from the van to the ground held on by magnets. That would stop the cold draft that is coming from under the van. Glad yoi ised the snow ❄️ to stop the draft from under the van.😊

That little heater is amazing. Thanks for sharing. It’s probably cheaper to run than the Mr Buddy as well. God’s country. We sometimes take our lives for granted. Great video man, as a construction guy who works in the cold and mad a few contraptions I think one more $10 tarp over the top to seal the gap you have at the roof would be a great way to hold more heat! Hope you’ll try it !

I was thinking that a strip to cover the area under the door would help, too. Easy to clip tight on the poles at either end to block out draft.

Just found your youtube. I'm in Minnesota too. Cambridge area. I'm a prepper/survivalist have been for 35 years. I'm going to go get one of those heaters. I guarantee that baby will work great with Crisco and wicks in those cups. They can be reused to try it out.

@@tburrows357I'll let you know what I find out with the crisco candles and this stove. You can always try it too. I could explain how to make a crisco candle but it'd be long. You can find a ton on 'how to' on you tube. If you haven't heard of it. It's actually amazing. I've been doing it for 25 years. It doesn't work as good as it used to because now crisco is made with soy. Before when it was mostly cotton seed oil it worked better. That was before 2007.

@@guidosarduce4054 I do know about the candles. My interest was on cleanup or would they produce soot? Also I have a friend who does the used cooking oil from local restaurants and runs his old diesel truck off it. Even made a oil drip camp stove for his hunting cabin. But the Cisco oil candles I also learned from him. He’s kinda a pyro genius he loves to play with anything that can burn or be turned into a burnable substance and if that means saving money even better

i have that heater its good to know it does a good job. I haven't used mine yet. The only regret i have is i paid full price. i bought this heater when it first come out. Lesson learned wait until it goes on sale.

To control the heat u can just use one can our two as needed I got a bunch of those can heat

I'd take thick cardboard and cut to the shape of area below the sliding door top block air. Also, I'd lay down a tarp as the floor. But, I hate cold, so I would always be looking for every nook and cranny that air could come thru. I'm a whimp when it comes to cold. LOL

Interesting toilet , similar to a portable handicapped type , would be nice to have a blowback shield at the back though.

That cooker/heater works better to cook food if you put something inflammable UNDER the cans of Sterno to raise them up higher. Boiling time will be a lot quicker than 20 minutes. Sterno is not known to cook foods very fast but this method will cut off several minutes before the water boils.

That's a great idea and a useful tip! Just one important point - I'm sure you meant to say use something NON-flammable, not 'inflammable'. Strangely, flammable and inflammable both mean the same thing - 'capable of being set on fire'! I know it's odd - normally when we add 'in' it creates an opposite idea - like 'consistent - inconsistent' or 'sincere - insincere', but inflammable is one of those odd linguistic twists!

I think this is something you should try out while tent camping bro. I know it’s not tiny but if you aren’t walking super far or have it on a sled it might be a good option for cooking and heat
