You are probably not too far off with that assessment. In order for the upper echelon of police administration to get to the levels they do over the course of 25 to 30 years, they typically spend very little time working in the lower ranks. This is especially so in a large department with many layers in the rank structure. A couple years as a patrol officer then a promotion to sergeant. A couple years as sergeant and then a promotion to lieutenant. So on, and so on. They don't get to spend any appreciable amount of time in the lower ranks doing the actual policing. They never get the road experience a veteran patrolman gets. They get moved up to being someone's assistant paper shuffler and spend the rest of their careers having very little clue what it's like to be on the street.

To me the main issue is green vs blue. When the modern police was founded in the late 1800s by Sir Robert Peel, he insisted that the bobbies (British cops) only wear shades of blue, dark blue, etc to differentiate them from the army, which wore red. I don't like it at all when I see cops in the US wearing green like they are in the Army. Wear whatever tac vest you want, but don't wear green. In a republic like the US, we should have a clear and solid wall between police (domestic) and army (foreign wars).

As a rank and file patrol officer myself, I don't agree with everything that the Toledo Chief said, but I don't agree with everything you said either. Having been in the military most of my adult life and now having transitioned to a Sheriff's Deputy, I agree with the Chief that the militarization of our law enforcement is not what we should be moving towards. We are public servants first and foremost. When dealing with the public, perception is a very important thing, especially when we have to deal with some of these SWJ idiots. Now, it should NOT matter what we look like as long as we do our job well, but that is NOT the world we live in and protect. As for the 5 yo child that's gonna be intimidated by the 6'3" officer with a TacVest, I call bullcrap on that. No kid is gonna be scared by the positioning of the officer's gear, those 5 yo kids are gonna think that our gear is cool, so I agree, total cop out. However, the Chief made a good compromise with allowing the suspender system for the duty belts. Having used one in the military I can say that it accomplishes the same goal as the TacVest. And these comments about "I am the King"...the Chief hasn't said anything out of line. He works for the citizens of Toledo and the Mayor. The officers of the department work, in turn, under him. Basic Chain of Command. Assertion of Command is necessary at times to enforce good order and discipline. A good leader uses both assertion AND influence to guide those under him. The "because I said so" is sometimes part of leadership, though it should NOT be the only thing. Sorry man, but I don't see anyone bullying with this story. Keep up the great videos and stay safe out there!

But don't you think that kowtowing to the SJW's and (trying to avoid name calling) let's just say, those who have vested interests in hamstringing the police by claiming that police "scare" them (which we all know is a hustle) is making the problem worse? - I mean, I'm not a cop, but as an observer of human behavior who's been around over 50 years, it has always seemed to me that authority should be polite, civil and decent while also presenting as a force to be reckoned with, should one decide to offend society. -- I work with kids .... and nothing about the officers' equipment scares those kids because (at least in my neck of the woods) kids know cops are the good guys. -- And just because in some cultures, single moms raise their kids to hate and obstruct the police, instilling in them the preposterous notion that cops are racist murderers, out to abuse a badge, I don't think that's a good reason to reduce the options of an officer, all so he can seem less "intimidating." - I think it's safe to say that the presentation of law enforcement should be, "Hey, here comes a good guy, a defender of society and the peace ... but should I get out of line, he looks like he and the system that backs him up will swiftly and if need be, forcefully ensure that I don't get far with my decision to be anti-social. - Prioritizing a "disarming" look over effectiveness is, IMHO, just giving in to a very ideologically dangerous and sinister movement within society.
@Cristov1234 жыл бұрын
As a veteran myself, I'm not sure I understand what exactly the "militarization" of law enforcement is? Yes, appearance is important for community outreach. But the last the I checked the difference between LEO and military was what their job entailed, not what clothes they wore. The issue is not our appearance, it's the media painting cops who have more equipment on them than an old Rusty revolver and a shiny black hat as "militarized". Wearing a plate carrier or a molle vest isn't exclusively military. In fact, my hunting gear comes with molle. It's just an attachment system. I think it's a disservice to paint us as militarized off of little more than aesthetic.
@redtra2364 жыл бұрын

I hope that you do have "good cops" in your neck of the woods but in the numerous places that I have lived and videos that I have seen, the police abuse their powers and violate the peoples rights most of the time. There are multiple things that go into intimidation higher build stance and outer appearance outer appearance is the biggest factor most of the time the officer already wears a vest regardless and they were trained in the academy with just a duty belt. The less militant the police look the better community relations can be in my home town the day shift officers wear a normal uniform the night shift wear a tack vest due to the lack of extra officers and people around to help in certain situations, like I stated there are some exceptions to the vest. All in all the less they look like how I looked back when I was in India and Africa and the Middle East the more lax the people can be with the police.

I'm with the chief on this one. US police seem to be the most militarised in the western world. Intimidation is a valuable tool to the police and don't fancy giving it up. If a citizens attire was considered intimidating I wonder how many police would leave them be to go about their business. I'm guessing not many.
@Buddha23Fett4 жыл бұрын
Robert Sung there’s nothing intimidating about a vest
@robertsung59344 жыл бұрын
@@Buddha23Fett I respectfully disagree with you as your comment is an oversimplification. There is a person wearing the vest. So if that person is behaving in a manner that is bullying/forcefull/intimidating then if they are also attired akin to the military then it is clearly adding to the intimidation factor. There is no shortage of evidence of poorly behaved police overstepping their bounds and infringing peoples rights with intimidatory behaviour on youtube. So a less tactical appearance may help to de-escalate scenarios. Remember we are still policed by consent, and not by force.

He is in charge. Someone always is. I was not in law enforcement but I had many bosses over the years. Here is what I noticed: If you came to work when scheduled, did the work the boss gave you to do, and followed all the safety rules then you never had a problem keeping your job. By the way, some jobs were less desirable but nothing anyone could not do. And no one bothered you as you did the less desirable work ; those jobs did not last long and everyone ended up assigned them eventually.

Maybe the chief used the wrong word. Instead of “intimidating” maybe he should have said “alarming”. Example: if cops saw a civilian wearing a Molle vest and open carrying (which is legal) I suspect the cops would be alarmed.

Just saw this video, please excuse the rant if y'all have found a happy solution to this issue. Many years ago (in the 1970s) the St Louis County Police Department changed their uniforms to blazers......you know, sport jacket style.....not only did they look stupid, they were a royal pain to "work" in. Luckily that particular (resume building experiment) didn't last too long, but it appears that this Chief has that same mindset......style over utility. And as you said, he seems clueless to the fact that all of that equipment is still visible to anyone that cares to look. And he totally ignores one of the huge benefits of a load bearing vest.....getting as much weight as possible off the hips and onto the shoulders....yes, it is an actual health thing. Another benefit is realized as the Officer is entering, seated and exiting a vehicle. I've been a LEO for over 44 years, so I think I can speak with some authority on the fact that that having all my gear on my gun belt, constantly pushing into various body parts as I sat, walked or ran, has had a detrimental effect on my hips, waist and thighs. I'm just guessing here, but I'd bet the Chief didn't ride around for a few shifts both with and without the load bearing vest before making this decision. Y'all stay safe and keep your heads down.

I'm just the average "Joe Citizen", a 61 year old guy near retirement. I'm Pro-Police. In my opinion I agree with what this chief seems to be trying to do. Perhaps not the way he is doing it, but with his goal. I believe our police have become to militaristic. Too many want to dress and look like military. And too many departments that have no real need are acquiring military vehicles and equipment. I would love to see officers back in a more formal dress uniform. And see them spending more time out walking and talking to the people in their areas. My ideas may be out dated, but all of my positive police interactions from my younger days were with officers in formal uniforms that took pride in their appearance and treated citizens as those they were sworn to protect, not as occupation forces like some officers do today.
@19XSB4 жыл бұрын
I see where you are coming from, however, police nowadays have to worry about an ever hateful community that's slowly growing against them. In addition, I believe that removing a load bearing device that nearly eliminates gear related back and hip stress is not the way to become more community oriented. Foot patrols are also too dangerous in many cities -like Toledo ;) - therefore making it tough to be out interacting with the community.
@timothycottom68194 жыл бұрын
I hear what you guys are saying. However, violence is not new. Big weapons on the streets are not new. In the Roaring 20's they used full auto Thompson machine guns. Bonnie and Clyde used BAR's. But police at the time were mostly arm with .38 revolvers. They still brought law and order and they still kept public respect. Perhaps the streets are "too dangerous" to foot patrol because no one patrols them and interacts with the people.

@@timothycottom6819 I agree with you. American police seem pretty intimidating to many people. More time walking on the streets and talking with minorities that may not feel comfortable around officers would be a good thing. Make Americans want to work with the police, not against them.

I guess my biggest gripe about the situation is if the vest helps an officer do their job and mitigate pain during their job then why are you taking equipment away from that officer!

well also a Tac belt is what most officers wear so why is a carrier vs- a Vest different its the same gear just localized in two different locations, hence why I also think this chief is stupid and I feel like you'd also agree with that point @Steve Siefelin

@@danikinzstar Actually it was in the 60's. I put this to you, has all the added armament, armor and military equipment made us or them safer?
