I think it's really nice to have both criticism and praise. It's like Jackson really created great movies from the great source material and people love it but still have criticism. And this is possible because he tried to mostly faithfully make an adaption of Tolkien's work...especially contrasting more recent things...
@reek40623 ай бұрын
Peter Jackson was really faithful to the book! I have found some behind-the-scenes footage of the films showing their respect towards Tolkien's work: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXmmnpyNlq2Iedk

Honestly the costumes, architecture and general "look" of the world is what gets me. It looks sooooo real and lived in. I am 100% immersed. The swords, the armor, etc. looks absolutely fantastic, especially compared to "modern" fantasy like Rings of Power, Wheel of Time or the Witcher etc.
@Vorontir1Ай бұрын
Some nitpicks. Most of the looks and backgrounds were great, but there are exceptions. Lothlorien only in darkness, plate armor and longswords rather than mail and onehanded swords a la the dark ages, bearded Aragorn, scimitars for elves, too much focus monstrous aspects in orcs and other enemies and above all the laughably bad choice of having Sauron as a lighthouse - an almost adorably bad interpretation of the eye of Sauron. Overall though the looks and settings are pretty good.

I realized recently that Gollum's "catch a fish" song is partly based on the book, from the expanded version of the riddle he mentions to Frodo and Sam that he originally asked of Bilbo, I'm not sure where though, probably not at the forbidden pool

Having watched the movies first, I was delighted to read the kill count competition between Legolas and Gimli in the book. And it got me wondering if Tolkien had done or seen something similar while at war.

I may have commented on your first video how Jackson copied Tolkien right down to the visual descriptions. Credit to Jackson, and credit to Tolkien for being a great screenwriter. O course Jackson had to create many visuals, but the ones that Tolkien did provide really play well on screen.

I don't generally defend all the added movie dialogue, since the writing often sounds like fan fiction. So I'm not a big fan of the Elrond/Arwen scene. Still, we know that their parting was bitter, so much so that Arwen did not go back to Rivendell, and we are left to wonder what contentious words passed between them.
@waltonsmith72103 ай бұрын
As many things as Peter Jackson got wrong, as much as he dumbed down the source material, made annoying changes and left out important parts, I still think this movie somehow got the general vibe of the book correct. Considering this was filmed in the late 90s and early 2000s, it could have been soooo much worse. I can only imagine how another director would've handled it. Thank Illuvatar for Weta Workshop as well. What carries the film for me are the incredible visuals, the acting, the genuine Tolkienian dialogue (even when out of context), and Peter Jackson's flashes of directorial genius. I think some other director probably wouldve made Rohan a generic medieval kingdom rather than give it the Anglo-Saxon look that makes it so memorable.

I'm not sure if we have the same understanding of Gandalf being sent back naked. I used to think this means that he was given a new body. But then he says that he had to recover from wounds, which is why he had to rest in Lórien. So I wonder if "sent back naked" actually means "without anything (to help me in this situation". Also regarding this instance, I wonder whether Gwaihir received direct instructions to pick up Gandalf, or if it was providential that he would pass by and notice Gandalf.
@TolkienLorePodcast3 ай бұрын
There are too many indicators for me to think he’s being figurative: “Naked I was sent back - for a brief time, until my task is done. And naked I lay upon the mountain-top. The tower behind was crumbled into dust, the window gone; the ruined stair was choked with burned and broken stone. I was alone, forgotten, without escape upon the hard horn of the world.” … ‘“A burden you have been,” he answered, “but not so now. Light as a swan’s feather in my claw you are. The Sun shines through you.” … “Thus it was that I came to Caras Galadhon and found you but lately gone. I tarried there in the ageless time of that land where days bring healing not decay. Healing I found, and I was clothed in white.”

I was wondering if you could address something? I keep seeing some people saying Gandalf faced only 6 or 5 of the Nazgul at Weathertop at night. I think Tolkien's plain words are crystal clear: he faced all 9. Could you talk about this and put in your opinion? Personally I just don't see why people oppose the Prof's plain words on this. SOME of the Ringwraiths rode across country straight after Frodo et al, and some took the road. Both groups of Ringwraiths were together when Gandalf faced them at night. At least that's what the Prof's plain language says to me.
@TolkienLorePodcast3 ай бұрын
It’s pretty clear he fought all nine. I don’t know how I could make a video out of it though. His account in Rivendell is all there is on it, since the entry in Appendix A just says he was attacked without further detail.

@@TolkienLorePodcast i guess if you could squeeze it in somewhere sometime, not for a whole video. I think your voice is pretty well respected on Tolkien. I really enjoy your delvings; there are other Tolkien commentarists on KZbin, and some with larger subscriberships, but at least in this humble Tolkien fan's opinion you are the subtlest (but not in a Saruman way :)) Jess of the Shire has her similar moments, but I still think you bring the most subtle perspective consistently.

Melon Geek, Your list of the points where Jackson faithfully renders the work of Tolkien for the screen is great. It reminds me that I need to read the books again, since it has been a while. If only PJ had done this faithful rendering consistently throughout all the movies, then we would have a classic without equal in cinema. I look forward to your next installment. Namarie.

Movie Elrond was wrong. Arwen did not linger on in doubt. She died. There was no doubt that it was going to happen. Elrond had seen it with his own brother. That scene was stupid.

@cpmf21123 ай бұрын
@@TolkienLorePodcast what other doubt would there be? The thrust of the conversation is that movie Elrond is trying several different tactics to make Arwen change her mind. That major difference from the book notwithstanding, I feel that movie Elrond's reasoning is false by implying any doubt by saying "you will linger on in darkness and in doubt ...until the long years of your life are utterly spent" and specifically not saying that she will die but implying she won't in order to make it seem much worse when there isn't any doubt what will happen as Elrond saw it with his own brother. She will die after a lifetime longer than normal men, but she will die. Actually going back, that scene angers me even more as Elrond says "He is not coming back" and "why do you linger here when there is no hope?". This is just a stupid lie and a big mistake by Peter Jackson.
