Considering Tolkien’s experiences with war and the horrific wounds suffered by the soldiers of WWI and WWII, I can’t help but think that there was quite a bit of sympathy for those who had lost hands, legs, and other parts of their bodies in war. In a way, I think he’s trying to say “yes, what you lost and what you’re suffering is great, But your life is not over and your deeds and contributions may be equally great. Do not lose hope!” Keeping hope alive in the face of overwhelming odds is also a recurring theme of the legendarium, so while Tolkien specifically “did not write allegory”, I can’t help but think there might have been at least a little moral to this story.
@tolkienuntangled
@tolkienuntangled 2 жыл бұрын
This is a very good point. Apparently, more so than any other war up until that point, a huge numbers of wounded soldiers who survived WWI were left with amputations and disfigurements. So much so that plastic surgery was (more or less) invented in the years after the war to help these wounded men. Beren and Maedhros could very well be an allusion to that.

He didn't like intentional allegory, but he couldn't escape his own frame of reference, and he wasn't opposed to simile. So perhaps it's more a simile - Beren is like or as a soldier or soldiers he knew. I'm stretching things, but still.

hm, I looked it up right now and you might be right that it's supposed to be Luthien but what irritates me is the eight pointed star on the statue. That's Feanor's symbol. And other than the long hair it doesn't look very female to me. But who knows, I wouldn't put it past the creators to muck that up. Looks more like Celegorm although it makes no sense that they would've a statue of him there

I would love how some of the secondary characters' myths would have been developed in reality. Mablung: "And this is Beleg, who has a *magic* arrow that he can always find after he shoots it." Beleg: "It's not a magic arrow! For the last time, it's a *regular* arrow!" Mablung: "But you always find it in the dirt after you miss your shots! Magic!" Beleg: "Because I *look for it* you moron! Anyone can find an arrow if they look for it!" Mablung: "Maaagic. Elven maaagic!"

I personally believe that it was Thingol’s fault, not Beren’s, that Carcharoth terrorized Doriath, for it was the elf king who set that suicidal task of retrieving a Silmaril upon Beren. Had he not tried to have Beren disposed of for having the courage to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage, then Carcharoth would not be there. Question. Do you think that Beren was ambidextrous? He seemed to be able to wield a weapon using his left hand after losing his right one. 🤔

It would have been incredibly sad and painfully ironic that should anyone (e.g. of the Edain) have encountered Dairon in the Third Age, they might have recognized the woman he sang of, but the only song they would likely have sung in response was the Lay of Lúthien, which would be the one song Dairon *did not want to hear.*

We all knew how Huan’s tale would end, in a manner of speaking. It was clearly laid out for everyone, Huan would die to the greatest wolf the world has ever seen. We knew, everyone in middle earth and abroad knew it damn near felt like, the story gave us THREE antagonistic wolves as a tease, it’s like a more well constructed version of the gag from Ian McShane as the second best character in that Rock Johnson Hercules movie. And yet, the ill fated battle with the greatest wolf of Arda still manages to completely steal the show. And as tragic as his story is, I can’t help but see a poetic beauty in a dog and his master giving their lives in joint for the sake of a beloved, a lord, now father, his land, his people, and an oath, all in the name of love triumphing against the darkest evil. This didn’t have to be Huan’s, nor Beren’s battle, but it was one they were more than willing to die besides one another for.

@@tolkienuntangled I like to consider him much more wolf than hound, absolutely huge, fast, tireless. Immortal I believe, beat Sauron, I think may be Mia? Carcharoths story is pretty sad to me too, even though he is absolutely terrifying and even though he killed Huan which is pretty unforgivable. He maybe probably would’ve been a heckin good boy had it not been for the corrupting influence of Morgoth. This was definitely my favorite in this series so far and I am very sad to see Huan leave the story but I imagine he’s running around Valinor playing fetch with Oromë.

Obligatory rest in Peace Huan, the goodest boi of all time. You were the greatest Hound that ever lived. Beren too, but his story isn't quite over yet. Thingol's character development in this story is just a treat to witness. He starts out as an overbearing asshole of a father and, for all intents and purposes, a secondary villain in the story, but even then, you understand where he's coming from, considering all the long years of suffering and slow descent of the land and its inhabitants he's witnessed - and especially the bullshit Fëanor's family is constantly up to, aswell as the betrayal of the Easterlings - that would turn anyone jaded if they lived that long. Of course he's overprotective of his daughter, even though he's being an asshole about it. But the way he finally realized the error of his ways and how wrong his treatment of both Beren and Lúthien was, was amazing. And just when he started to warm up to him, Beren sacrificed himself without a thought for Thingol, proving once again how great of a man he is. I imagine that must have hurt Thingol alot. So of course it would be Thingol who holds Beren when he is bleeding out, and still, even though they're now on relatively good terms, Beren is stubborn as always and one-ups Thingol again by finally completing his quest and handing him the Silmaril. This time, instead of reacting prideful at what I imagine would have previously been interpreted as a last "I told you I'd get it done, so fuck you", Thingol just feels shame and regret at himself, over the loss of a great man, and over his daughter's grief. It's a bittersweet conclusion to his character (well, his character in this part of the story), but also a realistic and kind of hopeful one. Yes, his regret came very late, but it shows that it's always possible to change for the better, no matter how set in your ways you are.

The machinations of the two bad brothers surely must have seemed strange even to those who knew them: in a society where everyone is immortal and expected to live forever, the whole "marrying the daughter to claim the kingdom" trope would be a very weird flex. Like, sure marry my daughter. But she'll be widowed before I ever die.

From the moment that Beren & Luthien escape Angband, how come Morgoth isn't sending out huge armies of orcs to go chase down the escaping Silmaril?

Fun and I know completely wrong headcanon but still: Morgoth feeding Carcharoth on his power is what inspired Sharon to make the Ring

Beren must’ve started off terrified of dogs of any kind because why wouldn’t he? Werewolves devoured his friends right in front of him and he needed to be saved from them. But here it is a dog who saves him from another dog and shows him not all dogs are bad.

Something I've been wondering, and maybe you even touched upon it but I fail to remember, because of Morgoth having the Silmarillions in his crown, does most of his servants just hate being in his presence? Cause he must be glowing like a lighthouse lol

Won't lie to you. Cried more than a little over the fate of Huan. Also, I can't but feel that Daeron illustrates one of the drawbacks of being an Elf: He'll live a long, long life tortured by his unrequited love, and on top of that the object of his desire will (potentially) live a long life as well, not returning his feelings. Oh, yeah, and one last thing: I, probably, will never be groovy, despite being born at the beginning of the sixties. It's not going to happen, but I do appreciate your good wishes on that point.

When I'm done with Beren and Luthien I'll do a short series on the Fifth Battle (which sets up the story of Turin) and then I'll do a whole playlist like this one on Turin and the Children of Hurin

Wait... Huan let Sauron live? If Eru knows all, doesn't this create the "problem of evil" paradox that most modern religious people have to pretend to not see (they all see it when it affects them)?
