My brother had to take a medical retirement from ranching after his third hip replacement. The Dr. told him his body wasn't handling all the wear and tear (both shoulders had steel pins holding them together)

Shutting down a major multi lane highway is destructive at best. Every ounce of pain that can be done offsite to shorten the time it takes to install this on the highway is worth its weight in gold.

@@Luckingsworth In Australia they installed 41 gantries (some 60m long) along one of the busiest highways in the country along Sydney's M4 with minimal disruption. All taken to site in pieces and assembled in the late/early hours. Over several months 9pm they close one lane each way, 10pm two and 11pm all close until 4am re-opens. One thing that may have helped is parallel to the M4 is another lower-speed highway that has frequent on/off ramps, the diversions were very good and at most it might extend a trip 5-10 minutes.

Believe it or not it can happen. If there's not a way to do a turnaround with the load and your route is blocked, they will make you just pull over on the side of the road as best as you can and make you wait. The state police don't mind because they are getting paid by the hour. On average they are making somewhere between $35 and $50 an hour.

To everyone asking "why couldn't this have been broken up into shorter sections and assembled on sight?"... I'm no expert, but i have to assume a lot of very smart and well paid people worked on this transportation problem, looked at different routes on the map, and considered different methods to achieve the same goal, and determined that what we seen here was the best/easiest/cheapest way to go about it. My hat's off to them because they apparently knew what they were doing and did a fantastic job. Also, no doubt the driver is most excellent, but he also had a lot of support personnel helping him maneuver that thing. It was no doubt a team effort!

Holy cow, listen to all the back seat drivers in the comments below. It would be very difficult to piece this down and take it in sections, which would still cause traffic problems, especially hooking those sections together on site and up in the air, when in one time to haul it all and end it. This was fully thought out and determined to be the best and safest way to do it and the least amount of traffic interference.

Anyways there was one time I was hauling a bull and a couple cows to a sale and I had to make a left turn onto a smaller road and right as I was about to turn this guy pulled out way past the stop sign and he was in the middle of the road to take a left Man I tell you the look on his face was priceless as he watched that trailer literally inches from his little car

It's a lot of pressure operating one of those things because if you make the slightest mistake someone could be killed or property could be destroyed cause there is a lot of weight on those heaby haulers and they don't stop easily that's why there's multiple operators for the rig , one being the main cab driver , another being the rear trailer controller then lastly there are the pilot vehicles that help to keep traffic away Along with guiding the operators around stuff so they don't have any collisions.

I was a rigger for a heavy haul company back in the 80’s. I mostly worked on the shovels we moved on to strip mines. Moving big stuff around like that can get pretty hairy.
