The tragedy of this scene for me was how Shiv simply cannot fathom that Tom genuinely loved her, because she's been raised to believe she herself is not capable of being loved. There *must* be some ulterior motive, because as much as that would hurt, it would make more sense to her. Sincerity is highly distrusted in the Roy family, since they've been raised by liars. The fact that so much of Shiv's argument in this scene comes from that place is what makes this scene equally sad for her as it is for Tom, who is of course 100% correct about everything he's saying.
@ViiZiiOnZ915 Жыл бұрын
Tom hit the nail on the head when he said "I'm sorry you didn't earn his approval. I have given you ENDLESS approval but it doesn't fill you up because you're broken." Saying she's broken is kind of taking it too far, but he's spot on saying her huge Logan-shaped hole isn't easily filled or wasn't filled by him which is so sad cause he genuinely does love her
@widowswail888 Жыл бұрын
100%. Tom actually manifested that fear in to reality by betraying Shiv and admitted to being with Shiv because of her name. While I don’t think she “deserved” it as much as she was a victim of years of emotional abuse which brought a cycle of traumas to her as a person and her relationship with others. At the same time, it is tragic (but it makes sense) that she can’t see that and take responsibility for her faults as well.
@mojo.s4669 Жыл бұрын
@An0n3mu55 What are you talking about? This show is sub-textually about toxic family dynamics and how it manifests in the 1%. The whole premise of the show is Shakespearean and rooted in the characters moving the narrative and not the other way around. So shiv being spoiled and getting everything has absolutely nothing to do with the point. The point is all the Roy siblings are fundamentally broken people, regardless of class. Just because someone is financially stable doesn’t mean they don’t have struggles in other aspects of life. I grew up very poor but had a very close and loving family, and that has impacted how I see love and the relationships I pursue.

He is striving, but wanting professional success and loving someone are not mutually exclusive. That’s what shiv is missing because she’s always seen these two things as diametrically opposed. Tom nailing her so perfectly here tells me that he does love her because he’s taken the time to understand her deeply. It’s what gave him staying power while she crucified him with her infidelity and “open relationship” pitch on their fecking wedding night. She describes him as servile, when it’s really his ability to comprehend motivations and digest them that gives him a sort of emotional shock absorber. When you love someone you try to truly know them. He demonstrated here that he does know Shiv, including her underbelly.

The writing in this show was already amazing but this scene truly shows the deep understanding the writers have of these characters. The way they orchestrated the back and forth, I've never seen an argument in film or TV quite like this one. Not to mention the performances were truly outstanding.

I've watched this clip so many times I've lost count, and it never gets old. I love the acting in this scene so much, and all they conveyed both verbally (while maintaining their American accents) and non-verbally. I think this should be something that is standard to be shown in theatre/film classes. How this is show that nobody I know irl has seen other than my mother is very frustrating.

It is says so much about Shiv’s character that she characterizes Tom’s selfless commitment and willingness to make a personal sacrifice as him being “servile”. She can’t comprehend a way in which a personal sacrifice is not some form of failure or indicative of a flaw.

The writers are clearly accomplished wordsmiths churning out clever quips and clapbacks, but most of this is simply direct and invites the actors to dance instead of programming fancy verbal choreography

Yeah, the directness of this scene felt incredibly earned after four seasons of doublespeak and coded language. The characters' fear of intimacy is baked into most of the dialogue, so the earnest moments hit like a train to the face.

It feels so real. Tom genuinely loves her and knows deep down she doesn’t love him because she can’t love anything. Shiv argues like a 6 year old brat who is just trying to hurt him. When she’s finally honest that she doesn’t care about him, she thinks she’s hurting him but it’s only confirming what he already knew and he finally has his feelings validated by his partner for once.

A perfect scene perfectly played. Something that really conveys the realism of a fight like this is how trivial, bugging elements like the "undrinkable wine" get thrown in as ammunition. It's very much a "And you never empty the dishwasher!" argument.

Tom offering to go to prison was a trust game that went wrong. I've known couples where one person will offer to do something difficult or painful for themselves or friends, knowing that their partner loves them and will chivalrously step in to prevent them. The person offering is allowed to look generous and noble, in the certainty that they'll never be asked to follow through. Tom played the game but Shiv didn't openly step in, so he was left feeling vulnerable and unloved.
