To me, Tom Brands looked pinned early on; however, one still has to be in awe of how much energy he used fighting off his back for so long but still had plenty in the gas tank to stage a dominating comeback. Credit to Dan Gable’s training for sure (and Tom’s heart of a champion).

Regardless if it was a pin or not, shouldn't the ref be in position to make that call? The ref is still standing! He should be on all 4's, right?

The lead ref who was out of the picture was in a position to make the call. If it would have been anyone else Gilbert would have got the pin

obviously Brands right shoulder wasnt down which is the reason there was no pin maybe if Joey had as much strength and heart as he does groupies to comment on a youtube video crying ''pin'' maybe he would've won the match.

I agree. Refs are afraid to call pins on big-name wrestlers sometimes. A state champ in my state was so stuck one time. Double chicken-wing on his back for 1:00, no call. Would have cost his team the match. BS. Of course, when you let him up, they come back to win. Have to say the ref's call in Backes vs Max Askren was great. Super pin by Backes.

Bullshit like always. Brands was pinned, but refs were afraid of Gable and Brands. Regardless of the fact that Brands would of won the National Championship. He was pinned. What a joke our sport is turning into. I have seen our amazing sport go down because of shit like this. Call pins when a wrestler is pinned regardless of who the wrestler is. We'll probably get it right when programs are dead throughout the country

Tom was a little slow getting back to the mat after counting the lights. You think he was tired? Too bad the opposing coach didnt get on the Ref and harrass him to call stalling. Oh thats right, because the coach has class. Who else does that???? i wonder???

Neither ref got down on all 4s because they didn't want to make that call. Have plausible deniability. And I am a huge Iowa/Brands Fan.

the reason why the refs didnt call the pin is because gilbert kept his left arm under brands' shoulder so he technically wasn't pinned.
