Well deserved. I came across this video whilst hoping for some kind of update that he had recovered enough to play again. In any case @Keeper1st I'd like to thank you for helping me discover Tom's work and particularly the videos in his honour such as the multi-hour transcription streams. Although my interest is not in music specifically, watching Tom has been the rare instance I felt I could *see* what decades of dedication to one's craft looks like. I do search up his videos and listen and he is inspiring me for all he has done and that legacy will live on forever.

Just a note from a lifelong pianist: what’s impressive about Tom Brier’s playing (and what caused his popularity to surge) wasn’t really his sightreading. Once you’re a fairly accomplished musician, sightreading isn’t really that hard, and if you zoom in on the scores he’s playing from, they’re not complicated at al. No, what’s impressive is actually everything he plays that’s *not* on the page. See, Tom Brier is a master at ragtime improvisation and embellishment, so he could take a fairly simple tune and add tons of runs, octaves, and embellishments to turn it into an incredibly complex and impressive bit of improv. Just thought it would be helpful to clarify that point.
@maxlibertor Жыл бұрын
Lmao it's true that many of the readings shown of him are basic rag sheets, the man also reads his own pieces (of course not sightreading, but he will heavily rely on sheet music to remind himself while playing something like PERIL IN PANTOMIME or PARALLELOGRAMS which is not an easy thing to do...) His sightreading AND comfortability in ragtime and improvisation are both extremely impressive and atypical. Composers have told me that when he read their music, he just made it better and basically played it how THEY wanted it to turn out in a way LMAO (I'm 15 and never got to meet the guy at his peak, unfortunately...) Sight reading at that level though still just simply isn't super common, even in the ragtime community.
@JediMaestr0 Жыл бұрын
@@maxlibertor I guess so. I would consider my sightreading to be on a similar level to his tbh, though I’m a far cry from being able to improv in any sort of coherent way, so I really do think it’s the improv that sets him so far apart and not the sightreading.
@bmk8018 Жыл бұрын
1) the top comments in tom's most popular sight-reading videos suggest that the sight-reading aspect is what most of those watching them think is impressive; 2) where are all the videos of other pianists doing sight reading to the same level as Tom? I can't find any on youtube 3) yes, tom's improv was great.
@JediMaestr0 Жыл бұрын
@@bmk8018 1) This is because most of the top comments are from non-musicians. People who don’t play music think that he’s reading everything he’s playing off the page and don’t realize that 90% of it is embellishment, plus I think people who don’t read sheet music find sightreading more impressive than those who do. 2) There aren’t a lot of “sight-reading” videos out there because for one thing, it’s kind of hard to prove that you are actually playing the piece for the first time, and for another thing, it’s not a skill that generally stands well enough on its own to garner a video. There are lots of great sight-readers out there, but it’s the style and skill with which people interpret the music they’re reading for the first time that makes them unique, not the reading itself. I myself would do a sight-reading video to show that it’s a common thing, but again, it would be hard to prove I was actually seeing the music for the first time lol. 3) Now there we can agree
@juliar6511 ай бұрын
Other pianists would bring complicated pieces to Tom to try to stump him. He has read through some very difficult pieces and played them flawlessly. It was only due to Ron O'Dell, that Tom ever played any gaming pieces at all. Not only did Tom play them, but the band that he formed with some other ragtimers played video game music as well .@@JediMaestr0

I'm also just a youtuber and "random person" to him, but his accident took away so much that could have been that I reached out.. It's very unfortunate that Covid hit exactly during his hospitalization and recovery which made even close friends having trouble getting in touch with him. After he went back to his parents in Oakdale, there hasn't been much updates or contact. He has however played again after the accident, though his arms struggled to follow his mind. And from what I'm told, he is very thankful and gracious for his fans through the letters he has gotten. My best wishes goes to Tom. I hope you're doing better these days.

Tom and I were best friends growing up in Oakdale - I can attest that visiting him at his house he would just play random songs from listening to them. We would play our favorite new music for each other and he would start playing the songs on his piano (he had one in his room) - Devil Inside by INXS is one I remember very well when he would just start playing it from hearing it. He was not only a genius at piano, but also at Math and was the Salutatorian at our high school graduation. He would just start playing current hit songs or even video game songs for fun. And he would start riffing at random and it was amazing to watch. I had a great knowledge for current popular music and brought it to Tom. He and I shared the love for not just current music, but the Dr. Demento show and Weird Al Yankovic. His love of humor in music went back to Spike Jones.

I had given up piano many years ago after playing it began to feel like a chore rather than something I loved. Then one day I accidentally clicked on the famous video of Tom Brier sight-reading Yoshi's Island Athletic Theme on youtube. That inspired me to pick up the piano once again and try learning that piece. After that, I kept learning all these ragtime versions of great video game pieces. One thing led to another and now I have fallen deeply in love with the piano and music as a whole. I even performed his version of K.K. Ragtime for my music GCSE performance (British high school exams). I'm going to study it an uni in a year. This is, in large part, thanks to Tom. Thankfully, a member of the Tom Brier discord community wanted to put together a video of people around the world wishing him a happy birthday a few months back and I was lucky enough to be able to personally thank the man who helped me find my passion in life. After four years of being kept in a nursing home (or something to that effect), he was finally placed in an actual rehab facility to get full-time therapy, but a few months later his family moved him to their home; he was apparently still getting care through professionals visiting them, but I imagine that this reduced-intensity form of therapy isn't as effective. Perhaps he was taken out of the more dedicated recovery program because the crash did too much damage for there to be a whole lot they could do to help him recover in the first place, or maybe spending several years with no care worsened his chances of decent recovery, or a slight mix of both - but, in any case, Tom still isn't doing too well, and probably never will.

I was introduced to ragtime by Tom's videos. I absolutely adore his compositions, and I listen to them almost every day on my way to work and back. I learned to play some of his best compositions, including "Strollin'" and "Meditation". I can't imagine how one would come about inventing such complex yet perfectly in-place harmonies and rhythmic formulæ. I sincerely hope he'll soon be able to play again as well as he once did.

He will unfortunately never gain the control over his other hand that he would need.
