Tom Brokaw Interview: Inside Watergate & The Unraveling of Richard Nixon

Journalist Tom Brokaw discusses the influence of his mother on his career, covering the Whitehouse as a young broadcaster in the 1970s, and how Watergate was the biggest single political story of his lifetime and one of the biggest stories of this country's history. Brokaw describes Ben Bradlee as fearless in what he did as an editor, and that Woodward and Bernstein gave investigative journalism an elevated place that made the country aware of its importance.
Thomas John Brokaw is a retired network television journalist and author who was born in Webster, South Dakota on February 6, 1940. He graduated from the University of South Dakota where he studied political science. Brokaw began his journalism career in Omaha and Atlanta before joining NBC News in 1966. Brokaw was the White House correspondent for NBC News during Watergate, and from 1976 to 1981 he anchored Today on NBC. He was the sole anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News from 1983 to 2005, and was a moderator for Meet the Press in 2008. He is the only person to have hosted all three major NBC News programs. He continued as a special correspondent for NBC News, producing long-form documentaries and providing expertise during breaking news events up until his retirement in 2021. Brokaw has won numerous, prestigious journalism awards, including Peabodys, Duponts, Emmys and The Edward R. Murrow Award for Lifetime Achievement in Broadcasting. He may be best known for his work documenting the sacrifices made by Americans during World War II in his book The Greatest Generation (1998), which profiled many of those who came of age during that difficult stretch of U.S. history.

Tom says Bradlee denied knowing about JFKs womanizing till the day he died. Ben may have denied to Tom knowing it but he wasnt shy about admitting it in interviews. Charlie Rose asked him if he could ask Kennedy one question what would it be and Bradlee didnt hesitate and said he would ask him about Judith Exner, who was also sleeping with Sam Giancana.

I think they planned ahead for lots of editing. He is 82 years old! But I don’t really know, it’s just my guess.

I think a comparison to other 'full interview' videos might be worthwhile for you. Perhaps like you, I'd like to hear the questions being asked as Brokaw heard them (if only because I'm listening to this doing something else!) I think it comes down to those asking questions weren't interested in producing an interview with him - they were producing a documentary about Bradlee. I think they've done this because it was never standard question and response... I imagine in this scenario, especially with someone like Brokaw, there may have been some discussion, but then when they found interesting responses they asked him to 'shape' them into anecdotes fit for purpose - the titles have been added here to make some sense of the response that would ordinarily have context in the documentary.
