Tom Brokaw's latest book, "Never Give Up," is a loving tribute to his family who headed west after the Civil War, and to other hard-working people of the Plains States whose stoic outlook built America's Midwest. The former NBC newsman talks with "Sunday Morning" anchor Jane Pauley about his parents, how Brokaw himself found the origins of his own success in a tiny town in South Dakota, and how he has persisted against an incurable form of blood cancer.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

Have to admit I was a little shocked at the change in him - I somehow missed his diagnosis announcement. Tom Brokaw is outstanding in his field, but my most meaningful memory was his comforting presence following 9/11. I would curl up in a blanket and watch until he signed off for the night, finding emotional refuge in a world that no longer felt safe. Grateful for all you’ve done in your career.

Tom Brokaw is surely one of the best news journalists to grace the television screen. His colleagues: Dan Rather, Ted Koppel, and Walter Cronkite are what i would call Real journalists. The news used to be 1 hour instead of entertainment and insipid spots of miscellaneous trivia. It was an exciting evening of learning about the news of the day, and it was presented with factual information that could be trusted. Nowadays, most networks are putting out lies just to appeal to a particular agenda. I long for intelligent journalism of 20-30 years ago. So much more informative and newsworthy.

Yeah, his great grandfather reminds me of my grandfather-/an immigrant from Poland when he was an infant. Youngest boy of 10. Out to work at 8, probably had dyslexia because he never learned to read. He was a functional literate. He lied to get into the army at 17, WWI. He was a semi-professional boxer, then a lineman in for NJ. He also took care of the field house at Princeton. My dad went on to be a sportswriter, my aunt a teacher. You couldn’t ask for a more honorable, hardworking man then my grandfather. The past generations have a lot to teach us.

Tom Brokaw was the most powerful news veteran in the business when he worked at NBC. He first anchored the TODAY show when he introduced his co-anchor Jane Pauley back in 1976, then, he became one of the three top newsmen on the big networks when it was the Rather-Brokaw-Jennings era (Dan Rather of CBS, Tom Brokaw of NBC, Peter Jennings of ABC). His colleague, Jane, joined Stone Phillips to anchor the most successful news magazine called "Dateline NBC" when the year Rodney King was beaten by white supremacists and it sparked massive rioting before I was born. His book brings back times and memories when it was a house on the prairie. This is why at 83, Brokaw is not giving himself up. Incredible reporting by CBS Sunday Morning; blessings to Tom and the Brokaw family.

The big 3 inherited the path laid by Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley and Chet Huntley. When Reagan threw out the Equal Time and Fairness doctrine in the 80's Fox arrived and destroyed MSM reporting. Now there is only dumbed down propoganda for the one party state and the neocon pharma machine. I would be very interested in Tom's real views on reporting today. He is a great guy!!!

One of those trusted faces. The minute you see Brokaw onscreen, you know you'll get straight talk, delivered by a warm, gracious man who is also a total pro.

These two are from an era of honest informative news. They would deliver unpleasant information with unbiased compation and integrity. Thank you for your time and service to this nation.. I had to edit out " United " because it doesn't feel like seem that way.

I just love the hometown American spirit and values that existed in past centuries. Despite the struggles and hardships, men were hard-working, faithful to Christian values, respectful of their families and communities, and raised their families to do the same. They achieved success through hard work and a don’t give up spirit! Tom Brokaw is an example of the values we should go back to. I loved the picture of his dad Red Brokaw as a kid. We should all take that stance when facing life and it’s challenges, and I am sure that Tom Brokaw continues to stand in his father’s example.

I couldn't agree more. Our generation needs to mentor the youth today and instill in them these values and faith that we were fortunate to have as children. "It takes a village to raise a child." It's our turn to do it for them.

@@tana5098 Mostly it takes a fear of God which is the beginning of all wisdom. As a popular preacher says “I wish kids were still throwing spitballs at each other and not wielding guns.”

@lightmessenger1705 Adults can help raise the children of today by mirroring what is good and faithful to them. We all learn from others. I believe we need to plant the seed in them, just as someone did for us. All it takes is a love for others and a sincere desire to be the role model they are searching for. I often speak to millenials, and this is what they want the most. Don't lie or be condescending, but through kindness, preach the truth with love to them. Isn't this what Jesus and His apostles did in the bible? We are the disciples of today, and it is our job to spread the Gospel. Thank you for your wise words. God bless you. 🙏🙇‍♀️✝️🕊

Apparently good ole Tom didn't have the wholesome values of the prairie people, because he was recently sued for sexually assaulting several women in the news room back then. He was groping and forcing himself on female employees like a prairie dog rapist.

Mr. Brokaw was part of the fabric of my home life years ago. The family sat down to dinner, then, when finished, Dad would turn on the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and John Chancellor. Excellent news coverage by two outstanding journalists. Thank you, Ms. Pauley, for sharing this interview with your friend and colleague.

@@cathynewyork7918 Actually there were 3 women that accused him of sexual assault. Brokaw is a hypocrite that came out with that hit piece on Trump, accusing Trump of the same things that 3 women are saying he did.
