"A cathedral is god's anteroom. It's halfway to heaven. And the light, the light is everything."
Pillars of the Earth is a brilliant tv series, the book is regarded as a masterpiece as well. It is a modern classic. I am definitely going to read it at some point in life.
I watched this how way back in 2010 when it first aired, the only actors who were regarded as famous back then were Matthew Macfayden and Rufus Sewell. Eddie and Hayley gave amazing performances in these breakthrough roles.
Tom Builder is a character who is interesting to watch and listen to. It's people like him that built these spectacles that have lasted generations and have us, historians and archaeologists, fascinated. Learning is a theme in the show which I really like. The character's death was very sad and shocking, but, I bet it was common for the master builder's to never see their work finished. Kingsbridge Cathedral is loosely based on Wells Cathedral (shown at the end of this vid) and Salisbury cathedral. I haven't been to either in the south, but I have been to Lincoln cathedral and York Minster, which are magnificent too.
There's something about this medieval architecture, beautiful whilst instilled with so much thought and meaning and hope.
A video on Jack Jackson will surely be next!
"But I come back again and again to the people who built the cathedrals. Those men and women were, by modern standards, poor and ignorant. They lived in wooden huts and slept on the floor. Yet they created the most beautiful and awesome buildings the world has ever known. Human beings have the capacity to rise above mundane circumstances and touch the eternal. This is what 'Pillars' is about, and, in the end, I think that may be why it has so profoundly touched the hearts of so many readers for so many years." (Follett, xxii).

I love this story. One of the great books I ever read. It tells us the story behind religion and royalty, sex and religion, freedom and slavery, cruelty and love in short meaning of life.

I am full of admiration and respect for the builders and the people who created such monumental structures with the means and possibilities of that time. They were true geniuses who made their visions come true. Thank you Robbie for a fascinating insight into this topic.

@@RMFilmStudios you definitely should the show ruined so much. The end of almost every character, the motives behind the characters actions, the path the characters take, etc is all basically changed for the worse. Everything in the book was logical but I can't say the same for the show.

This looks an exceptional movie, with some magnificent architectural buildings Robbie , I can see why you would be more than interested, when I was a young girl my parents had a fascination for Cathedrals and old churches, I had to tag along as I had no choice, now I am grateful fore that opportunity apart from one fateful day when I accidentally stepped onto a grave that gave way under me, that wasn’t such a pleasant experience as you can imagine, every time I saw Michael Jackson performing ‘Thriller’ my imagination ran away with me! It still does! You couldn’t make it up could you 👻 Robbie! I bet you really look forward to my comment’s 😜 I will pack up if you like🥲

It is exceptional piece of structural meaning! Especially during a time when people didn’t have much. I think a lot of people feel that way about cathedrals, but I guess once you start to see them in a different light (like with many things), it becomes all the better for it. That’s why I recommend Pillars of the Earth which does just that. Oh god that experience sounds awful! I think I’d be having crazy imaginations after such a close up sight with a grave 😅 Reminds me of Jack Sparrow when he falls into a grave. Not at all, I always read and take in what you have to say in the comments to the videos 😊 It’s nice to actually know my videos (especially the historical ones) are giving viewers an insight and joy and not just to myself haha. If you want to continue commenting, I’m all for it Bernice! I haven’t started watching Leonardo yet, but I hopefully will do soon.

Thank you Robbie, It was horrific I went down quite a few feet! dad had to haul me out! I was most careful where I put my feet after that, yes I remember ‘Jack Sparrow’ I can’t tell you the endless amount of times we visited these monumental ancient sites as a child, no wonder I have always been interested in archaeology etc. Is this movie currently available? ‘Leonardo’ I thought was remarkable, Aidan was magnificent, so believable I was in tears, he had such a sad, lonely and very unlucky life as you will already know, I read one comment yesterday saying that Aidan couldn’t act! well you can imagine some of the public replies! I may be a bit biased but come on!! the videographer just replied everyone is entitled to their opinion, yes but not to be darn right rude and disrespectful, of someone they know nothing about, let alone know how to act! anyway Robbie let me know you honest opinion, I would appreciate it. take care until the next time 🤗😊👋

It’s on the Starz app on amazon prime uk, but I’m sure I saw it advertised for free to rewatch on the channel 4 or 5 website. I really do recommend it. The books by Ken Follett are very popular too! I think Aidan Turner is a very good actor and so I imagine Leonardo will be a great series. You can’t please some people I guess, but as long as you enjoy, that’s what matters most. I don’t actually know a great deal about Da Vinci, but I would imagine it is sad. It’ll be an interesting series to watch for me and I’ll let you know what I think about it. Take Care 😊

Robbie, I will look into it, I am sure you will like ‘Leonardo’ I found it very rewarding as I knew little about him also, just as a matter of interest ‘Southwell Minster’ was a favourite place to visit very impressive, you may know of it! take care, swap notes when we have seen forthcoming attractions 🤗

I haven't seen the series but I'm really excited to watch it. That being said I feel like the little bit I just saw is unfair to Jack. Tom wasn't this amazing visionary who wanted to build higher and higher. He was a very practical man. Jack was the one who went off and convinced Philip to use the new methods he learned. The cathedral starts with Tom's very practical vision, is massively improved by the skills Jack learned....and is ultimately completed by Murfin who's the true visionary that makes it the tallest cathedral at the time. But that's in the next book.
