Escape Velocity was my favorite freaking game back in the day! Thanks for the nostalgia Bruce! You never levelled up, you just got money for trading and the like. You could be a trader, a space trucker, an explorer, depending on the ship you got. You couldn't actually buy real warships until you were trusted enough by that factions military. You could always buy pirate ships though, or alien ships, and just make other ships combat oriented. Still, the game was a blast. Best old game ever in my memory, alright, one of the best.

I spent a lot of time playing Escape Velocity when I was a kid. The best part was if you didn't register your game, the developers put in a invincible ship manned by "Captain Hector" that added a whole new challenge to the game.
