Tom Cruise Crazy

As Jonathan Coulton wrote in his blog when he first released this song, there's something kind of sad about people who succeed so completely at becoming rich and famous that they stop existing on the same planet as the rest of us and start living in some other universe altogether. This song pokes fun at Tom Cruise for losing it publicly like he did, but it also seems to pity him a bit as well. Tom may be nuts, but he does make good action films, and it's not pleasant to see anyone go off the deep end like that.
Special thanks to my Co-Creative Director on this video, Nick Bayhi. Nick came up with most of the clever movie titles on the posters, as well as the idea for the video's ending. As Nick put it, "if he's so crazy and narcissistic, he should just marry himself". Genius!
(Note to Tom Cruise, if he's watching this -- hey Tom, we're just having fun playing with the stereotypes here. Nothing personal. No reason to get upset or sue anyone, right? So, you and me, we're still cool? Call me. :)

Not that the world needs a song to know Tom Cruise is batshit crazy, but just the fact that there IS a song about it speaks volumes.

Well the context of this song seems to be that of the hub-ub of people thinking he was a closeted homosexual overselling his heterosexuality on Oprah's show in 2006 or so. You can divorce the song from the homosexual self-loathing aspect and view it as a simple but true parable about how the internal self does not always match the external self, both for big name celebrities, and for people in general.

I interpreted it as such: He isn't satisfied or he isn't happy with his life yet everyone (more likely than not before he went off the deep end) thought he was such an awesome person and wished they were him. In a way I think its a "The grass is always greener..." scenario.

The old man part where Tom is looking at his reflection and it says, "You can't handle the truth" is a quote from A Few Good Men. The second part, is a when Tom, as an old man, says "Definitely, ten minutes to Wapner" is from the movie Rain Man. One thing that I couldn't figure out, when Tom slides in on his socks and underwear, is that from Jerry Mcguire or Risky Business? I tend to mix those two up.
