What Tom says there at the end is spot on. Success is absolutely subjective, and attaining fame will not bring meaning to your life. Create art for the sake of creation, not to find means to an end.

Can confirm -- Buddy and I are in our 30's and, like many of us, grew up listening to Blink. We took a road trip earlier in the year and some tracks from TOYPAJ and we started talking about albums. He had NO idea that that album name was a double. Cracked. Me. Up.

Motorhead in NO WAY EVER had the promotional scale of Blink. "Every 2 years" means record releases, a year of constant promotion traveling the country and beyond, then a year of constant touring THAT album, then start over. Motorheads dropped albums, did 6 weeks of small press, and a 2 month tour.

So it was a cool and funny thing...

I love tom but saying he snapped, his family couldn't keep up that blink wanted to start up again after stopping from the last tour he wanted to spend time with his kids so why did he go straight into writing AVA songs recorded their album and was out on tour in 06 would that not of happened the same way and time frame as if he stayed in blink? Just a thought!
@rjs3590
@rjs3590 2 жыл бұрын
I think if I can summarize this accurately… I think Tom was sick of the same crew over the last 12 years. He wanted to be more experimental, like he was with boxcar racer. And riding with AvA allowed him to write on his own terms in his own studio at his own leisure with his family right there in the same house, not having to piss anybody off to not go write songs or tour for the next album… I know that there was a lot of hostility and feelings of betrayal from Tom creating BCR that was never healed. Just my 2 cents
@DV-zv4ox

He wanted to write and record the entirety of his "next album" at home, so he could be with his young family. Not to mention the unresolved tension from Box Car Racer that lingered for years.

AVA is on his own label. He explains it pretty well in his documentary, but when he wants to put out an AVA song, he can get to work on it right away; he couldn’t do that with Blink. He would get the run around and have to go up the chain of execs before even getting the go ahead. Blink revolved more around major tours and promotions, when Tom just wanted to be able to close to his family, and then tour without getting burned out. He also wanted to create and experiment with music - and pretty much any other media project, on his own terms. AVA and To The Stars allows him to do all of that in a way Blink simply doesn’t.
@punkgrl325
@punkgrl325 2 жыл бұрын
@@stephensporman8206 I think a lot of that had to do with imposter syndrome and Tom trying to convince himself (and fans) that leaving Blink was the right thing for him to do. He even admitted how scary it all was for him at first. In order to leave Blink, it had to seem like what he was creating was something worthwhile and justified, even if it ended up making him sound kind of pompous and crazy to everyone else as a result.
