It's actually hard to argue, but even though I think Tom Dwan was wrong, he was not AS wrong as many people might think he is. i played shortdek 6 and 7 for years in all variants, never heard that trips beats a strght. it would be kinda unnessesary as you have so many boats anyway, beside a straight would be become unplayable at all. also trips might be less common than straights just because you wont take all the boats into account. trips turn so often into boats that well yea indeed they are realtivly rare just because they are stolen by boats lol

I don't think Doug realizes how strong 98s is on the turn. When you make your flush in short deck, the chances of someone having a higher flush is very low. Robl playing this way with AcJc, Jc9c or Ac9c is less desirable because you'd be blocking cards you want the other players to have.

Hey Doug, just wanted to say I've been a fan of your channel for a while and really enjoy the videos! Quick question wrt the hand above. At the beginning, they said Robl and Dwan took money off the table to play shorter stacks. I've never been in a game where such a thing was legal so how are they able to do that? Was it a house rule or something?
@bebla83815 жыл бұрын
Robl has 78cc, 98cc (2 combos) for VALUE (AJcc i think would trap the turn instead of raising)... and AcQx (3 combos) as possible BLUFFS... Badziakouski has AcAx, QQ, and maybe KQhh... all of which fold to this amount of action. So if Dwan thinks Badziakouski is folding nearly 100% of the time, the only one he has to worry about is Robl, and if Robl can have AcQx in his range then its an outright profitable call. Thoughts on this?
@andrewstolzmann26635 жыл бұрын
Well, like Doug said, Dwan has to suspect that Badz is along for this ride because he has the Ac (which, of course, he does) so those AcQx bluff combos aren't so likely anymore, right? And to make matters worse, if you do put Robl on a flush draw semi-bluff...then what exactly is Badz, the preflop raiser, holding? (Btw, its impossible for Badz to have KQhh when Dwan is holding the Kh IN HIS HAND.) So in short, I don't like your analysis.
@bebla83815 жыл бұрын
@@andrewstolzmann2663 sorry i meant KQss... When Badziakouski calls the only flushes he has are maybe A4cc and A5cc, and you can argue he doesnt even have those since he may be betting all nut flush draws on the flop... but lets say he traps some of the time and so lets assume he can have 2 combos of flushes on the turn. These flush combos are the ONLY combos that will call Robl AND Dwan's all ins... all the other combos in his range, which are AcXx combos and full houses, FOLD to Robl and Dwan's all ins... So in Dwan's shoes he knows Badziakouski folds nearly 100% of the time after that much action, and thus the only one he has to worry about beating is Robl. I agree with you in that when Badziakouski calls that bet on the turn, a large percentage of the time he has the Ac making it less likely Robl is bluffing. The only times Dwan is ahead is when Badziakouski has a full house and Robl has the AcQx.. which is nowhere near enough of the time. So yeah, considering that i dont think Robl has AcQx as a bluff nearly enough, also he may not even have any bluffs whatsoever in that spot so i change my mind, its a mandatory fold all things considered.

6:17 the straight draw is NOT dead against the King since the rules you quoted in the beginning are not the ones they use. they play the game straight > trips. which makes sense for cash game. raw probability wise trips are less likely than a straight but when you for example flop top set against a straight you are roughly 50-50 to win the hand in short deck if the money goes in. if trips would beat the straight it'd be drawing dead. so for cash game straight > trips is the way to go and they play it just like that. i played quite abit of short deck and trips > str8 is definitely the inferior rule set.

Doug you should break down the hand with Wang vs Cao, shortdeck tourney where they were clearly team playing or colluding. I can share the video link if you're interested in breaking down, be good topic for polker news

So A7s is a mandatory call there even tho it plays really bad and flushes are even rarer? Also Robl is very high up in his range (like having 4c4s on 5c5s4d 6d 8d in full deck) is that a fair analogy?

WTH was Dwan hoping for? He must of been confused by hand rankings.

Yes Doug, short deck hold'em is something I'd like to learn more about!

Okay, I'll take on the role as the Devils advocate here. Lets say that Robl shoves AT-AQ with the Ac as a bluff in this spot, that would be *9 combos of bluffs* that Dwan beats. As flushes beats full houses, it's also reasonable that his value range could be flushes only. Assuming that he folds some unconnected hands like J6s preflop and that he doesn't take a line this aggressive with a straight flush, he might have something like As6s-As9s, 6s7s-9s8s, 8s6s-9s7s in his value range. And guess what, that's *9 combos of value.* Unlikely, maybe, but I don't think that it's completely unreasonable. At the very least it shows that it would be a pretty clear call if he had a club in his hand. PS. Doug even said that he thought 9 high flushes were too thin to shove btw (not that I agree, but still). If Robl doesn't shove all his low flushes, that would lower the amount of value hands drastically, making the call even clearer.

I don't think Robl can bluff that many hands, because it's three handed not heads-up.
@oyuyuy6 жыл бұрын
@@koolcoy That much? It's only 9 combos, that's like 5% of his range, not much at all imo. But if you mean that his ratio between value and bluffs should be higher, then fair enough. But even if Robl had 2/3 value and 1/3 bluffs, Dwan would probably get roughly the right odds to call here. My guess is that Dwan simply expected Robl to bluff more than that and thus he called. We will never know what Robls range really looks like though, so we can't really judge I guess.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard them say triton short deck rule is 3 of a kind beats a straight
@kirilgeorgiev96405 жыл бұрын
@George traitoros Ace can be the lowest card in the poker deck. In this poker rules they don't play with 1,2,3,4,5 so Acee basically play like 5 for straight, but for card 6,7,8... Ace didn't replace them :)

I like you mixing it up occasionally with a different kind of poker. Even though you're better with NLH, I like seeing how you process something different and translate a little bit for those who are total unknowns to a different poker game.
