There's a great story about the Dutch queen Wilhelmina who had a foreign guest who also didn't know the proper etiquette at dinner, who actually did drink from the water bowl for cleaning your fingers. What she did was she famously also took a sip from the bowl to not make him uncomfortable. Now that's class.
