Tom Hanks is really such a nice guy! 10 years ago I use to drive a school bus route that passed thru his neighborhood in the Pacific Palisades. Every Tuesday morning just around 7:30am, Tom, his wife and their son Colin always stood curbside talking in front of their home. A couple of my students were their next door neighbours. Every time we passed them, we waved at them and they waved back. Usually Tom waved first and that was so awesome!

In a world full of so much preventable misery, Hanks rents yachts that cost hundreds of millions for hundreds of thousands per week. (Just one example, let's not even get into his houses--houses plural mind you, as if anyone needs more than one, and one of which recently sold for over 17 million, as if anyone needs more than a 300k house, adjusted for area or cost of living--cars, etc). No decent person does that. You can say "well, he gives such and such amount to causes..." fine, but a decent person would never engage in such grotesque luxury knowing that the same funds can be spent on saving lives and preventing so much misery. He could give probably 99%+ of his personal wealth away and still live a very comfortable upper middle class lifestyle (which is a level of affluence that is more than any person ever needs). But he doesn't, he prefers to live in obscene luxury, hording over 350 million in net worth, in a world of so much preventable pain and that's a huge moral failure. And before you call me a hypocrite, I live well below my (compared to Hanks and other ultra rich) meager means in order to give to causes each year and I've done this since I was a teen and started working; I literally have spent over 250k so far and I'm far from a rich person (total net worth is just 350k including modest house, used cars, and some savings/investments for security in the event of: disability, disease, recession, depression, early retirement etc.) nor am I old (I'm early middle age and I hope to give over 700k by the end of my life to causes which will allow me to live on about 40k a year and keep some money, as mentioned, for emergencies or security). It's what any decent person should do in a world so full of want.
