As a Scandinavian (Norwegian), I still remember the first time I read the (Swedish) book this movie is based on - and the whole story is just hilarious and heartwarming. Truly one of the best books I ever read. Also the Swedish film, was just brilliant. Now that Hollywood is going to make its own version of this story, I’m glad they did it just by picking Tom Hanks for the main role - he’s perfect for it. Looking forward to this movie!

Hei! My family is Norwegian-American. We checked out the "A Man Called Ove" film. It was great! Haven't read the book, I should check it out, too. !!spoilers!! I kinda' worry that because we all know what a sweetheart Tom Hanks truly is, his character's eventual redemption from crankiness won't have quite the same impact. He can play grumpy, but his reputation is so beloved, we all know it's an act. I bet that Walter Matthau could have played this character very well, in his day. He already had that "curmudgeon" type of character as his trademark. Jack Nicholson did "As Good As It Gets" as a jerk who redeems himself, but not quite the same flavor. I'm trying to think of what other actor these days of an appropriate age has a reputation for playing truly crotchety, grumpy older dudes; not coming up with one off the top of my head. But I'm sure Tom Hanks will do great. He always does. Ha det bra!

Distraction. Most Hollywood movies. Distraction. Now here's an interview between two evil creatures who sold their souls to the devil quite some time ago for fame and greed. Nasty side-product of these decisions is that even more entities, behind the scenes, are using these ignorant and controlled and men, filled with fear, to make the human drama on this planet even more ignorant, controlled and destructive. Steve's story about starting in 2nd reminded me of my old friend Walter. Born in the 1890s , so didn't really grow up w/ cars . He drove everywhere in 2nd , kept the revs up always , and controlled his speed w/ the clutch . We lived on a small island , so he never went far (just store and home , really ) He replaced the clutch quite often . He was British and was in both big wars . I have a hunch he learned to drive on some sort of tracked vehicle . There was always a cloud of smoke around the car .A wonderful guy .

I learned to drive from my Grandpa on a big old Ford truck from the late '30's that had no synchromesh and so no real clutch. You had to listen for when to shift. I was also tiny at that age so he had to tape blocks of wood to the pedals so I could reach them. I loved him so much. Good times.

My first car was an old toyota pickup, and I arbitrarily took it as a challenge of skill to start it in as high a gear as possible just for fun. Definitely possible to get it moving in 4th gear, but must have been hell on the clutch wear-and-tear (only did that once).

@@mr.mrs.d.7015 That brought back so many memories! I learned how to drive in a '74 Jeep Cherokee made by AMC (American Motor Company). Back then, it was so huge and I was pretty small. There was a pillow to sit on, two pillows behind my back, and blocks of wood duct taped to the pedals so I could reach. Back then it cost so much more to buy a vehicle with an automatic transmission. Nearly all vehicles were manual/standard trans. Yes, such good times. ❤

Go see this movie! Saw it last night. Wonderful film. The tale takes a few deeply profound human themes and intertwines them in an almost quiet way behind the crankiness, yet in such a touching and relatable journey. You want them as your neighbors, even Otto. Past Tom films like Castaway or Philadelphia for me; one to two tearing up times. A man called Otto? Six. Minimum. Almost lost it more than once only to look over at my wife to see her holding back tears too.

My dad insisted that my brother and I learned to drive stick. This was in the mid-'90s. It came in handy once in college when- due to circumstances I forget- several of us needed a ride and a friend's stick-shift car (without the friend) was our only option. It was stick, and I was the only one of this group who knew how to drive it, so I became the designated driver for that trip. It honestly has not come up since then. I probably retail the skill somewhere in the back of my mind, but not having used it since 1998/99, I'd probably have to practice a bit 'til it came back into my muscle memory. But I am glad I learned!

I hardly ever watch movies and hadn’t been to the cinema in years until the last fortnight when I saw this and The Whale. They were both so good. But A Man Called Otto on a hot summer night, outside at the small outdoor Rooftop Cinema in Perth was spectacular. I laughed and cried and was even a bit confused at my unexpected feelings at the end. Took a minute to hang out in my bean bag with the credits running afterwards, needed that in a kind of strange way. I don’t think Tom Hanks has ever made me feel like that before. I will remember this movie and as soon as I can I’ll watch it again so my husband can see it too.

U just gave me a traumatizing memory of me learning how to drive a stick. My mom was yelling at me because we were on a hill, at a stop sign, and a car behind me. Of course the car rolled back, don't worry I didn't hit anyone, but her yelling stressed me out so much that I put the car in park, got out and walked away.

@@kimberleyphillips6671Ah, technically that's the parking brake. "Putting it in park" typically refers to an automatic transmission. Don't mind the car enthusiasts, we're nerds 🙂 PS: using the parking brake is the key. Hold it on, rev engine, get clutch on the biting point, then simultaneously let off brake and accelerate. The e-brake is used as a hill hold, basically.

Can we not wait til this guy is dead to acknowledge how much joy and happiness he has brought to all of our lives along the years. Thanks Tom Hanks for all the laughs, tears and all the range of emotions you have made us feel! You sir are a national treasure! I want to thanks him from the bottom of my heart! I don’t have any social media so I can’t post it straight to his account so if someone can copy and paste to his Facebook or whatever other social media he uses I would be very grateful! Thanks again!

Crying out loud ... that was my dad. I've been renting cars all around Europe and surrounding regions in this last year. They don't ask if you can drive a stick shift and every car I've rented is manual. Fortunately, I learned on a vw bug a million years ago.

It's still the default in most of Europe and the automatic cars are still the odd one out. My dad got asked if he wants to buy an automatic and each time he said "hell nah, that's for old people!" I never learned how to drive automatic. My driving instructor dedicated a theory lesson to it, but we never get to sit in a car like that since the driving school didn't have one.

@Adriana Heiler I prefer a stick shift, but it's almost a rarity in the usa. I would contend that nearly all rentals are automatic.

We had our school bus stop at the neighborhood grouch's corner. His name was literally Mr Wilson, like on Dennis The Menace. He lined his trash bags with newspaper, when he put his trash out, so we couldn't see what was in his trash bags. As IF we cared! He had a HUGE yard with a sidewalk running halfway thru it & we rode our bikes down his sidewalk, so he set a friggin LADDER across his sidewalk to keep out us pesky kids.

First of all, I have never been a Stephen Colbert fan. The opposite can be said for Tom Hanks, whom I’m a tremendous fan of all of his motion picture work. And his work in “A man called Otto” clearly shows how completely thorough how much Tom did his homework on this project. OUTSTANDING TOM!!

I had a similar 'driving a truck without 1st gear', but I had to back it up a hill while it had a ton or more of wood, into a space that was maybe 6 inches wider than the truck, while I was unlicensed. I also used it in a tiny forest, loaded it up with logs and then drove it out, those were some nightmarish situations, but that's probably how you get better at driving.
