Season 1 (2017) of Taboo is a historical thriller filled with intrigue and revenge, starring Tom Hardy. Set in 19-year-old London, the story centers around protagonist James Delaney James suddenly returns to London from Africa years after the baby thought he had died and inherits a key piece of land left by his father, Nootka Sound, a movie that land is of extreme strategic importance to both the British East India Company and the United States.
James' return disrupts the existing power structure. Not only does he have to face the complex intrigues behind his father's legacy, but he also has to contend with the corrupt East India Company, corrupt government officials, and hidden family secrets. At the same time, he utilizes his intelligence and ruthlessness to maneuver with all forces, gradually revealing a larger conspiracy.
The entire play is a dark, gothic representation of the harsh realities of 19th century society, including themes of colonialism, power struggles and revenge.
