I find it interesting how time changes the perception of songs. Back when it was new "Green Green Grass of Home" was more often than not taken as a country music song. You can hear that in the beat and its absence of a shuffle. The shuffle is supplied by the piano rather than the drums. And that's a church choir backing him, but not a gospel choir. Although the lyrics tell a prison tale, the song was often repurposed back then vis-a-vis the soldiers fighting and dying in Vietnam. Rather than casting the music as this or that, I think Tom Jones and others show how music crosses over boundaries to unite people otherwise divided by ugly fallacies.

Mugs, he woke up in a prison cell. He said, "There's a guard, and a sad old padre. Arm in arm we'll walk at day break.". He's on death row, and about to be executed. And in death, he will touch the green green grass of home.

"Tom Jones has expressed relief at being proven right in his belief he has black ancestry, after a DNA test confirmed a link with relatives based in Africa over 200,000 years ago", 200,000 years ago???that could include most of us!

Tom Jones refuted reports that he was going to take a DNA test to find out if he had black heritage. He told Larry King that 10 years ago and explained a reporter asked him if he had any black heritage and Jones jokingly responded that maybe he did of something along those lines. Tabloids ran with the dna story , typical celebrity tabloid gossip. And Jones never said anything about any DNA results. Btw many Welsh ppl , and the Irish as well , have dark hair, and even a darker skin tone . All ppl of British arent red headed and fair skin . The Romans occupied Britain for 3 & 1/2 centuries. And the Spanish sailors were in Ireland centuries ago. Not that it matters what Jones ancestry is, I'm just saying he never made the statements that you attributed to him

My brother and our families would meet with our long gone parents and sing this song together as my brother played guitar and sang the lead. Not a dry eye was seen. Miss my folks so much but will meet again I pray.

I never knew. Exactly imagery makes a story so much bitter. Sad but God made it happy. He was very popular with the ladies because of his hip moving. Excellent song.

This song was sung by dozens of vocalists , walking to his death he understands that the life of crime caused him realized the simple heaven of loving family he gave up . Big tear jerker when we were kids . Back the regret songs were huge with the adults. Hmmm

I am really disappointed with this race issue attached to performance of an artist it seems if you not black then you have no soul this is complete nonsense

I didn’t create the stereotype. Just like the term “Negro Spiritual” but let me educate you on why. Soul music is a popular music genre that originated in the African-American community throughout the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It has its roots in African-American gospel music and rhythm and blues. Soul music became popular for dancing and listening, where U.S. record labels such as Motown, Atlantic and Stax were influential during the Civil Rights Movement. Soul also became popular around the world, directly influencing rock music and the music of Africa. It also had a resurgence in the mid-to late 1990s with the subgenre neo-soul, which added modern production elements and influence from hip-hop. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_music?wprov=sfti1#

@@MugnifyRTS I had the same perception before that only black music had soul I listened to only rnb, jazz jazz funk, reggae etc etc I had all the albums and ignore the other genres which the vinyls were all available at that time and i regret putting my money in one basket as i am now 63 years and listening to all genres i have discovered and sincerely believe that soul exists in any individual who is blessed to be an artist only the styles are different like flowers of different colours and as God created us in different beautiful races and cultures but we are one people keep on listening brother and I hope you find out what I have Peace

@@MugnifyRTS soul is everywhere and it's source is from god black white yellow etc. blacks label their brand as soul music, whites are respected for their music labelled classical, folk, country, opera etc are rich in soul which is a spiritual and universal thing that's why any genre song if well put together will blow anybody's mind because it's the soul that takes over your whole being anyways brother I respect your views and will not respond to you again enjoy your musical adventure
