Wheat prices are so low now that farmers are going under, even farmers without debt. We have no debt,and our farm has little to no profit. Wheat prices should be at least $15 per bushel but the USD is so strong we get, at best, a little over $5, making it a loss for us many wheat farmers. But bread and pasta prices have doubled, so the middlemen and retailers must be making profit! In 1950, wheat prices were around $2.50, so with just CPI inflation, wheat prices should be around $33. The cost of chemicals, fertilizer and equipment has risen more than inflation, and even with better yields (some years), there’s no way this will end well for farmers and the eating public.
