I remember the day that war was declared "over", and ran to tell my parents that I just heard it on the radio. Then I asked what happens now? Up until then, I didn't realize it could have an ending.

I'm not a gamer, but my 27 year old son is. I think it's cool as hell that he's digging that music that was popular even before MY time! I love that he became an instant Danny Kaye fan, just like I did the first time I saw and heard him. As a teenager in the disco era, I was an Ella Fitzgerald fan. I kept it a secret until one day my best friend was over and discovered my albums. She was thrilled, because she loved her too! Dad walked by my room, heard us singing Gershwin tunes along with Ella. He smiled and said something like, "Oh, these kids and their crazy "modern" music!" Next time Rosie came over, she brought Billie Holliday records and I fell in love with another great Diva from years ago. I miss my friend, gone too soon. RIP, Rosie.

Do you mean to say that generations younger than yourself don't understand the existential dread of potentially being only moments away from global nuclear destruction? Because I assure you, that is something I think about on a semi-regular basis - but try not to worry about because ultimately what good would worrying do? When death comes, it comes - it matters not how much one worries, or indeed what generation one is. Death levels all, including those who have an ignorant attitude to the youth of the day.

Yes, a lot of his songs are like that. Bit more complex than the witless pointing and laughing you get from... some people (no n. no p.d.). From what I've read (I wasn't around back then) people regarded nuclear war as if not inevitable, at least extremely likely - this was only a few years after the Cuban missile crisis, after all. And perhaps it's relevant that Lehrer had worked at Los Alamos and knew that, contra some of the military people, a H-bomb can do quite a lot of damage.

This song is specifically appropriate with regard to my saying "so long" to my love interest who lives in a foreign country. And, while I´m not off to drop the bomb, I´m off on Friday to another country to live there, following in the wake of having been rejected by this woman who initially invited me to come and live with her in her country and then, abruptly, closed the door in my face for reasons unknown. So, "So long X, I´m off to drop the fishing pole in the Algarve, so don´t wait up for me! Maybe "you can watch me on your TV" inasmuch as I plan to revive my talk show again once I move back to Los Angeles around a year from now. So, "so long" x, I´m off to the Algarve, so "don´t wait up for me". In fact, don´t even f..ing bother!!!!

Colour TV was first shown 1954 and it took them the first years to get recording devices to work with colour tapes. After that the first TV shows could be taped and it already was the early 60's. Colour TV became a normal thing during the late sixties and just because something was recorded in colour, that doesn't mean it was seen in colour by the audience. Television sets weren't cheap and colour TV was a bit like HD-TV. It's been around for a while but you still see people's TVs without it, because it's only about 10 years ago, that TV adapted the technology, even though you might one day say "I can't believe they didn't have HD tv in 2010!" and then you see that it was invented way before, but in 2010 people were actually just still getting the technology.
