The problem is the differences aren't going anywhere and it's easier to be a turd flinging monkey (which doesn't usually help or change anything..but I guess it's entertaining) than it is to try to listen to somebody else's value system when it's the polar opposite of yours. What is truly brilliant about this is how accurately Tom represents both sides without tipping which side he would be on. I’ll freely admit that I’m firmly in the red shirt camp. That said, I don’t scream about hating anyone. I’m more than willing to have a discussion with the other side, make my points, and back them up with evidence. The problem is, most of the people from the blue shirt camp refuse to acknowledge the evidence, go directly to name calling, and then rage quit the discussion. All of that said, I respect someone on the left infinitely more than a fence sitting “both sides are bad” person. At least the person on the left has an interest in bettering the country. Regardless of if their stance is right or wrong, they at least have the balls to have a stance. The fence sitters love to complain about the state of the country, contribute nothing to the solution, and then have the audacity to say “Don’t blame me. I didn’t vote for him.”

I think Tom is definitely playing off the extremes of both sides, the people who make the most noise and get the most attention and on the hook he's the normal guy, watching it all burn while we argue in echo chambers that aren't really that pervasive or effective in real life (in my experience). It does get clicks as said in the video but out in the real world most people get along well enough then go home and argue online.

This is my thought on that. Accountability is important for anyone trying to push a message, gain something, and prove something. There is no accountability anymore. Even if these are only the "extremes" of the left and the right, they overall have the support and backing of their political party. There are no political leaders speaking out, correcting their party members when then they take it to the extreme. If anything, they support and promote it. How many people speak out against their own party when they take it too far. I'll answer that from an outsider looking in. It's almost no one. Conversations behind closed doors don't promote or change anything. It's not activism, it's complaining. Until political leaders start correcting the parties they represent, I will consider the "extremes" the norm and expectation.

I enjoy how straight you keep it even on these videos. To be honest I've had my ups and downs with Tom and his music but while some of that is simply differencing in some of the opinions he shares, I've realized a bigger part of it is with a big portion of his community that don't really seem to fully pick up on what Tom says or at least what I personally interpret from his music. That is the fact that we truly won't get anywhere without trying to understand each other. Everyone has their issues, and while I don't think it's possible to satisfy every single person on this planet or even this country, I do believe that we can get to a point that is better than where we are currently. There is a seemingly small minority in the community like you and a few other reactors that seem to get it, but then there's also a big group of the community that pretends to see things on both sides and acts like they are in the center but will still call one specific side lunatics or delusional every chance they get which makes it feel like they missed the entire message. It's one thing to point out flaws with each side, but when you start name calling and not even attempting to understand someone else's points or ideals then what do you really expect to happen? Open and patient communication can do a lot more than people think. I just wish more people would learn more patience, on all sides, and in all the places of the world.
