The reason why you never heard about him is because how "best" guitarists are classified today. Best guitarists, unfortunately, are classified based on their core guitar skills, such is shredding, legato, picking (hybrid, sweep), etc. Tom doesn't shine in any of that particularly, whatsoever, he shines in his own style, rhythm, etc. No guitarist is gonna compare Tom to e.g. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Guthrie Govan, Malmsteen, etc. It's simply because they are not even remotely close.

Cornell was amazing no doubt, but everyone writes songs that fit their own voice. Range, key, and where the break is to flip from chest voice to head voice make a big difference. I'm sure Cornell would've struggled with some of Serj's stuff.
