What happens in the shooting sports is that the skill, equipment and ammunition advantages of the top shooters is very small. So small that if they keep entering matches they will win some and loose others just because they were there. Look at it like this, the scores from one day to another of a single shooter can vary more than the difference between the first place shooter and the second place shooters. Ends up being a chase of luck when one gets that good. One has to win more matches for a difference to be seen and even then a good streak can happen at random. Don't get me wrong, it isn't all about luck because getting to the top not only requires the best of everything it is also a lifestyle. So it is with everything else too. Chess players, card players, baseball teams etc.

Very good stuff guys. This conversation is best for people who are in the upper realm of competitve shooters and above average ammo loaders. A couple of years ago I would have been lost. After lots of trial and error and hair pulling I have come up with some of the same ideas and results. The target groups laying over one another is the best way to shorten Hornadays super large shot samples into a large powder or seating depth test. Shot my first ever Dasher barrel with a never before used bullet, brass and scope in a match 4 days after screwing it on and finished 3rd place after not shooting a match in 4.5 months. I covered lots of ground quickly because first shot at the match was shot number 67 through that barrel

I don't know enough about benchrest shooting but the guys I have watched talk about it seem to say they shoot 1 and 2 inch groups at 1000 yard. Am I understanding them correctly?

@@BelieveTheTarget That is insane. I have got to go watch a match sometime. I will probably come home sell all my guns and just take up knitting. I could never come close to that kind of precision.

Im certainly not a professional competition shooter , but I do feel I understand it. I dont believe if it doesnt stress you when a shot goes wide your not the type person to put in the time and effort that prep takes to get there. Erik Im loving your podcasts thsnks .

Thank you for presenting how arduously folks work to get to the top of their game in our shooting industry. Repeatedly shooting small groups in match conditions at long range is difficult. These type of interviews demonstrate dedication to excellence in the shooting sports. Other interviews that would show different aspects of how you have to put in the work to be successful in the shooting industry are Dave Gullo a multiple BPCR champion and multiple winner of the prestigious Matthew Quigley Long Range Match. Dave also contributes to our industry by running Buffalo Arms Company which manufactures and provides equipment to shooters. Another interesting interview would be to interview Adam Weatherby, the third generation Weatherby to run the company and grandson of Roy Weatherby. How many people know that before taking the CEO post at Weatherby, he was a youth pastor at a church in California?

Very unusually for Erik this was not a good interview unfortunately. Letting Tom ramble on was painful and extremely dull. As you say, a LOT of words, but very little actual information. A wasted opportunity imo.
