Cannot get enough of Birbiglia! Funny because of his genuine vulnerability,,,sometimes I cry real tears because I can finally face that same "thing" with love & forgiveness.

I love this conversation! I think it is so important, for men especially, to see this is a great way to look at fights with one’s friends.

Yo shouts out to City Green! My mom helps out with their books and actually saw the donation from Mike Birbiglia and mentioned it to me. Which led to us watching his new special as a family the other day, which led to me bingeing his content today, which led me to this comments section! Small world man.

Mike! Loved seeing you working it out in Indianapolis for my 40th with my Mom. The joke where Clo says you don't seem happy definitely works. I think a side that could perk it up is to define "happy". It's such a limiting word for such a complex feeling. They say Eskimos have like 200 words for snow. Maybe we just need more words for happy. Like recovering from cancer is a very specific happiness. Taking off socks at the end of the day is a different kind of happy. So on and so on. I think the goal isn't happiness, but maybe satisfaction or belonging.

This was a wonderful video to see, both as a new comedian and as an older person (54) who has trouble with conflict. It's wonderful to hear about your experiences and how you moved to a new level in your relationship, while also sharing how comedy doesn't always have to be a "me against the world" kind of conflict. Bringing the audience in as part of the conversation and just enjoying the idea of making them laugh is all I've ever wanted to do. Thank you, Mike and Tom for sharing your thoughts.

Re: asking peeps for help: asking the wrong people too many times that ignore, betray, or reject you... Makes asking anyone at all REALLY hard. Re: Are u happy? "Not happy" terrifies people hiding from the truth. "Not happy" (dependent on outside circumstance) does not preclude contentment (all inside job. ) Aaaaand the thing about guys like you using FUCK in your act is this... Ya gotta EARN it and ask is it the BEST art for the art. A-okay to Fuck is the greatest extreme. From purity to violence. It wins. Unless it's A-okay to "Other times I just wanna punt my kid's puppy."... But the people who laugh at that punchline are not your fans. Some people think meanness and dark truthful humor are the same. Wise comedians know they are not. May you both continue to use your humor and wisdom to benefit humanity.

Cursing is not bad, but what makes it the biggest laugh in your act is the element of surprise. If you curse every sentence, this wouldn't get you the biggest laugh. But the fact that you rarely curse surprises people when you do it, and it has more impact.

I actually disagree at 36:46. The prison being Scandinavian helps the joke. & sure, most people don't know, but it's irrelevant. We all just assume that everything is easier there...

@@wildboer Absolutely. That shit fascinates me...but even for those unaware of their prison system & the Nordic model in general: if you were to ask whether they'd prefer to go to Riker's Island or some prison in Sweden, they'd probably think, "Well, you know it'll be furnished by IKEA & they'll have hot cocoa so yeah, not a tough choice..."

I interviewed Mike (for a small-town show) around the same time Tom called him out for social climbing. I admit Mike was kinda dismissive, which I found really discouraging. Nice to hear it was just a phase. Now I can love his comedy without that old sting.
