Yep. She said it was one of the hardest things she's done, to just be dead the whole time.

When Tom Petty was deciding on who would play the corpse in the MV, he is quoted : "She's got to look really good, or why would he keep her around after she's dead? I thought, Kim Basinger would be good." Basinger said it was one of the coolest things she ever did!

This is one of my all time favorite Tom Petty songs, and I'd never seen this video before. What a huge distraction it was for me from the story of the song and how great the music is! I was just so freaked out and wondering wtf with the corpse that I had a hard time actually enjoying how incredible this song is musically. You should jam out to it with your eyes closed also, just to focus on the music and enjoy it that way also

She was born in a dead, podunk hick town where nothing ever happens, and when she grew up she couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. The natural progression is that she hit the big city, partied too much, it took her life and this guy who desired her (but never had her), watched helplessly as she went down. For him, gettin' high is the only thing that kills the pain of losing this girl that he always wanted, but never really had to begin with. Oh, and it's him who is stuck in the same old town, with the same old people, with his only perceived shot at possible happiness gone. It's a classic tale of life in middle America. Anyway, that's my own take on it, for whatever that's worth. Keep up the good work India...you've made KZbin interesting again. Peace!

When this music video came out in 1993, Tom Petty stated that it would be the band's last "concept" music video that they would ever make. He said this because the band was getting tired of the grind and hard work that was involved in making "concept" music videos. In Tom Petty's later years, he and the band, The Heartbreakers, would make music videos of themselves playing their musical instruments in a recording studio or a rehearsal studio.

@@rediron44 Thank you very quickly. I love this song. I never thought what it was about. A song doesn't really have to be about something to be good. I love Bob Dylan and Tom Waits where imagery is thrown at me like fastballs. The video accompanying the music looks like it has nothing to do with anything. I wrote a song, tried to create imagery. Maybe you can tell me what it's about... God is on fire. Blood on a roof. A mantis enjoys the lizards day off. Life in the gutter. Love on a floor. The less we embrace the more we ignore. Intangible tangents. Rickets and rot. The things we possess are the things we have not. Long can seem short when compared to the breach. My heart for a being I never might reach. If I were a whaler my shit would be best. I could leave her forever lose her at last. Save up my silver for the next port. Send her a package empty of course. I have a melody I sing it to. I was communicating with a very attractive woman on line. I was kind of going crazy because I wished I could be with her. I kinda fell in love with her. Anyway, I told her I was going to write a song for her and this is what she got. Not the type of thing that would have her dive in my arms. But it's not my nature to write, I don't, romantic dribble. She was older like me, not the type that would be impressed with hearts and flowers anyway. But by abstract I think I wrote something with more endurance. Anyways, how do you like my song?

The meaning of the video: Annabel Lee BY EDGAR ALLAN POE It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love- I and my Annabel Lee- With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven Coveted her and me. And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsmen came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre In this kingdom by the sea. The angels, not half so happy in Heaven, Went envying her and me- Yes!-that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee. But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we- Of many far wiser than we- And neither the angels in Heaven above Nor the demons down under the sea Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling-my darling-my life and my bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea- In her tomb by the sounding sea.

This song really has no meaning but what you want it to be really. In an interview the guitarist of the Heartbreakers Mike Campbell said this when asked about the meaning of the songs lyrics and whether Petty intended it to be about drugs or not: "In the verse there is still the thing about an Indiana girl on an Indiana night, just when it gets to the chorus he had the presence of mind to give it a deeper meaning. My take on it is it can be whatever you want it to be. A lot of people think it's a drug reference, and if that's what you want to think, it very well could be, but it could also just be a goodbye love song." Tom Petty is another one of those artists that I simply cannot think of a single bad song of his.

Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger was uncredited in this music video, and apparently was paid scale (about $3000) despite the fact that at the time she was commanding salaries in excess of a million dollars per movie. She said it was one of the easiest parts she ever played. She just sort of sat there with her eyes closed and everything happened around her. She had a ton of fun playing the body, and she said that if she knew that "playing dead" was so fun she'd have done it earlier in her career.

I remember when this music video debuted and how so many people thought it was too morbid for MTV. I actually think it kind of hurt the song's sales a bit...there were a thousand other ways to put that song to music that would have been less disturbing. But, on the other side of that coin...the video is remembered for breaking boundaries back then....it was so very dark, when a lot of videos were more mainstream and didn't make people uneasy watching them.

One of my favourite Tom Petty songs. The music video is great but it's really distracting from the song in this case, especially if you've never heard the song before, it's harder to appreciate the music with this other very dramatic story playing out. I remember Tom Petty always dodged flat out answering what this song was about when asked. Always saying people should draw whatever meaning they want from it. It could be about a relationship or it could be about drugs. Though at their concerts whenever they play this song they always show a video with smoke from a joint on the screens. But I like to think of it as being about both things.
