Love your vids...How did you do this though w/ all the copyright issues YT always has? Did you get special permission from the Petty estate? How did this work out? Curious b/c I too am in the midst of starting a music channel but need more info on how to do it the right way...?

As a 40 plus year fan, Tom solo is the best thing. There’s a lot to like here. What got him noticed early on is the quality of his writing. In this setting, stripped down, the songs, for one thing, are masterpieces.

The same reaction- TP unplugged, his songs stand on their own without the band embellishment, although they were best in business- and what a huge heart, giving his all here for a Bridge School benefit.

So, so true. I’m a 40 plus fan as well. Good God, I miss him. He and the Heartbreakers combined the best of rock ‘n’ roll from many eras into one beautiful symphony of sound. In Tom’s songs I hear the Beatles , Lennon, ❤️🙏🥰, Elvis, Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Johnny Cash and Chuck Berry as well as countless rhythm and blues artists who never received the recognition they deserved. Their music filtered through Tom and created something truly unique-an American masterpiece, never to be seen again. I thank God I was alive to witness it, and as Tom said, I can only thank God I was not too late. Now, I pass the love and the wisdom of it to my children. God bless you, Tom Petty. Thank you for the role you have played in my life and the lives of so many others, and so many more yet to come. Through your songs, you will live forever. May the love of all your family the world over sustain you and keep you forever, as it has for all of us.

I have always been a lyrics- driven person. Something can be garbage around you as far as the music. But if the lyrics rip your guts out or lift you up higher than you ever thought you could imagine in the quality, it's all good. Rest in peace Tom

What got him noticed was Damn The Torpeados, and the time in Rock n Roll that it was released. I bought it when it came out at all of 11 years old, and though young I remember that time clearly, with the mix of disco, a lot of bloated boring rock, etc, and bands like TP, the Pretenders, The Cars, and The Police, with their 1st 2 albums in 78' and 79' shook up the industry, where there was a market for music that was kind of between hard rock, punk, and disco. I got so into Pettys Torpeados album (even that young) that I couldn't wait to get Hard Promises when it came out, but I didn't like that one anywhere near as much. Also bought the 45 of The Waiting, and on the B side was Night Watchmen, a song that even pretty heavy PT fans probably wouldn't know or remember. Petty was amazing though, like a Jackson Browne on steroids!

This was WELL before the “acoustic sunrise” sets artists ended up doing- Tom Petty here in this -set the bar! Superb writing, singing, and related to his audience up to the week before he passed. As his daughter has said about him - he was MAGICAL!!! Also how awesome was he just singing and strumming his heart out all alone ( Benmont for a second)for such a great cause!!!Thank youuuu for posting this - watching in 2022!!!

As a true musician his voice as a performer was chameleon-like. This was a Dylan period so I hear Dylan inflections; in the mid to late '80s he was still a babe magnet; (at one time subscribed to a Facebook group focussed on the Heartbreakers but opted out because of the plethora of photos of him when he was young which did not do justice to his whole career) -- there was a Byrds period; there was the acoustic 4 octave range of Wildflowers; there was the raunchy voice of 1st three albums plus last one, Hypnotic Eye and yes he was quite capable of barking like a dog on stage. His voice was a musical instrument. He loved those high harmonies; hence Ron Blair then Howie than Ron Blair again. As he aged he himself couldn't hit those high notes but worked around those limitations brilliantly. What struck me was that this is the first live benefit he performed solo … and it worked!!! Used to Springsteen and Sting doing that but whatever he said about the Heartbreakers when they hurt him, they were a substitute family in a way that isn't true for more ego-driven artists.

Everything Evelyn said. It was that stage presence of charisma and confidence, that made him and his band so popular in Gainesville. In Conversations With Tom Petty, he told Paul Zollo that the band was heating up as a live act, in Hollywood clubs, before the first album release. He heard that other bands were imitating them, on stage!

Brittany I truly hear you. He was my friend; shouldn't be posting this info but wtf. Grief takes its own time; one day you'll wake up and when listening to his music that element of loss and sadness won't be there. You'll just rejoice for having heard this ineffably great music. Someone strung the worlds charisma, confidence and sexy -- well in 1986 or 1988 yes he was a babe magnet, but I'd like to put that aside for a moment and focus on charisma elusive word to define, you have it or your don't; confidence; the most hard-won of all his qualities as a definite introvert. Best wishes and so glad his last years with Dana plus grandchild!! were happy ones.

Allyn Kessler you are a gem!!!!! I don't think of Tom performing without the Heartbreakers; this was in the wake of the Dylan tour, so he sounds Dylanish, brilliantly. I watched a recent interview with Mike Campbell and when asked what was his favorite Heartbreakers song he paused, minimalliy and it was this song; SOOO early in their career it stand the test of time. Many tx once again!!! I'm used to Sting and Springsteen doing solo performances; this was brilliant.
