Tom's version takes this classic Solomon Burke tunes to a greater level of blues/rock. RIP TOM
@eddreznin300211 ай бұрын
Burke's version is a rumba beat and is absolute soul. The Stones covered it and turned it into a slow blues - with Brian Jones playing great blues guitar throughout. Petty's version is in line with the Stones' blues version.

Tom Petty had a classic "one liner" concerning this concert. Springsteen was a huge super star at this time, and Tom went on before Bruce's segment of the show. When reassured that the audience was not "booing" him, but instead was yelling "Bruce!", his rely: "What's the difference?" Perfect.

Still hard to believe that’s he’s no longer here with us, a piece of my heart died, memories of my youth listening to his music and relating to so many of his lyrics, his voice soothing my soul during times that I needed comfort. 😢💔

I remember seeing the No Nukes concert movie in 1980, 1981 - many stellar performances, but this was the best!

Love this version! Wish I could see it in a live video. Love Tom Petty, I think he's Awesome as is his Music. He was one of a kind & will be missed by all.

This was filmed for a movie but Tom Petty would not let his performance be released. Bummer!
@jimwilliams3816 Жыл бұрын
I think you’re referring to the No Nukes concert, of which a movie was made. I read an interview once where Tom explained why he pulled out. As I recall, he said the band hadn’t played together in a while, didn’t have a chance to rehearse, and were playing borrowed instruments. I remember this quote pretty closely: he said “some people thought I was a dick for pullin’ out, but it wasn’t something I’d wanna see on late night television for the rest of my life.”

Love, love, love this version. Must be one of the few Tom Petty songs I don't have from one of Tom's albums. I somehow missed this one. Got to find it!

This was recorded at the "NO NUKES" concert in 1979 at Madison Square Garden, for a Nuclear Free Future. Song #21........I know of no other recordings of this song by Tom & the Heartbreakers. One of the best!

This was a song he did live on the No Miles Concert with Doobies and CSN and jesse collin young Jackson Browne and more. There is a live double album. My dad bought it when it first came on sell at the original Sound Warehouse. the n the 70s around 76 or 77. No Nukes. Last of the Cold War Days.
@johnbator46882 жыл бұрын
Angie, I have no input on how to find the album. But the Cold War went well into 1989. I was in the navy till 83. The soviet union began disbandING IN 1991 THOUGH SATELITE COUNTRIES LIKE ROMAMNIA GOT RID OF COMMUNISM IN 1989

Dennis thank you so much for this audio of this amazing performance by Tom in 1979. But please could you put up a photo of him from 1979 and I love every photo of top me this photo up there's gorgeous but it's doesn't go with a song that he's singing in 1979 so there's a lot of photos of him out there so I have to say I haven't seen one that I know of it's supposedly dated that year but definitely even you could use one from there's gobs of them from 1978 and 1977 so maybe use one of those photos if you can't find something from 1979! Thank you so much! ..somebody else has asked you this question here also. like I said this is a a lovely picture of Tom but it just isn't it sits decades away from this song that you posted so please post a photo from the '70s thank you

Sounds a lot like Jagger and this is The Stones arrangement. Original by Solomon Burke has totally different groove. Petty is gettin' down on this one. Mike Campbell is doing slide guitar much in the style of the great Mick Taylor, too. Sweet!
@BabyBatFliesFree7 жыл бұрын
larry geetar yeah absolutely agree. Having grown up listening to these guys live as Mudcrutch then getting to listen and watch them grow and evolve has been a very cool experience musically. It's great when you get a group as talented as this or the Rolling Stones with enough staying power (i.e. talent & ability to grow) to get to really listen to the music (and see the band) as it develops. But, always thought he really laid on the Mick Jagger on this though and would have preferred to hear his own take/version of it if that makes sense. Still awesome, just saying from a musical standpoint lol. Lady Anne ^^ö^^
