In 1999, Tom Petty sat down with Jana Lynn White on her 'Speak Easy' show to discuss his life and career. Petty talked of his love of rock and roll music, the 1997 and 1999 residences at The Fillmore, the then-new album 'Echo', and how he kept busy post-divorce by writing the 'She's the One' soundtrack and appearing in 'The Postman.' Other topics discussed include the Heartbreakers' early days in LA, their rise to fame in England and the United States, making music videos for MTV, the formation of the Traveling Wilburys, getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and what it was like working with Jimmy Iovine, Dave Stewart, and Jeff Lynne at various points in his career. Petty also, interestingly, praises Madonna and "imitates" Ricky Martin.
Enjoy!

Unlike so many other rock 'stars', TP was the real deal..and he never forgot where he came from. Despite being, arguably, the 2nd greatest American songwriter of the last half century (second only to his Bobness) he remained genuinely humble & appreciative of his enormous success. The problem with loving an artist's work as much as we do Tom, is how painful it is when he leaves us. Once, and forever, a true Heartbreaker...
