I do agree that the Hmong community needs to change our eating and hosting habits. As a woman, I'm tired of cooking for the entire village. My husband and I fight all the time regarding the need to cook a pot full of food. The community is hitting obesity really hard. Diabetes and high blood pressure and not enough exercise.

I get that obesity is a problem in the hmong community but you still have to consider the people you are serving if you are a host. This lifestyle will take a lot of time to change, for a whole community. I never see family as a “whole village” because Hmong people have big families. During events you dont do everything yourself because you have family and its not frequent that you host these events. But whatever, do what floats your boat.

Yep. I hate these huuuuge nonsense hmong gathering. Immediate family is fine! Don't need to invite the whole village. I'm just glad my parents has stopped doing all these "ua neng" gathering and make it very small for my family and invite my uncles only. My in-laws.. I've been married to my husband for 12 years, they've only ever had these big event for (1) wedding and (1) house warming party. Oh boy, real American integration. Expect these challenges to be the norm. We are already seeing many changes in this area where physical labor has been reducing and catering supplementing. I think we are starting to realize the important of both men and women creatively inter-socializing. It is a small step in realizing the equality of labor that the women have been enduring and given very little credit. Brother, your 2nd wife was a visionary, and she is trying to bridge both cultures and finding better ways. Of course, it did not meet your needs because you guys didn't hear each other and come to agreements. Now, it is perfectly normal that some personalities just don't work out, and mainly because the beliefs are too different.
