And considering he had saved her from getting “mutilated” by Injun Joe and his partner (it was supposed to be Injun Joes way of taking it out on her, on behalf of her deceased husband who was the judge who had him prosecuted.) Despite the fact that he was dead, Injun Joe still held a grudge against him and was still indignant over the “injustice” of the prosecution; thus his evil deed of mutilating Widow Douglas in her sleep was going to make up for her husband having passed on(“I would certainly kill HIM if he was still here!” he tells his partner.) Anyway, because it was like Widow Douglas had wanted to return Hucks gratitude, or good deed of saving her by giving him a home, he in turn could have at least shown he appreciated it.
