Polly should have saw Tom like God saw him...God most likely saw the Good in him that everyone else didn't.😊

This had to be pre-Civil War. I can imagine what Aunt Polly could have said: "I'll not have that kind of talk in this house, young man! That's what's wrong in this country today. Too many people think that they are God. If things keep on like they are, will we even have a country? Now go to bed. No supper for you."

It's been a very, very long time since I last saw this movie, but I think I remember almost that exact sequence happening. Somewhere in the course of mouthing off to Aunt Polly, Tom says something about “If'n I was God…”, to which Polly reacts pretty much as you describe. He then sings this song after he's banished to his bedroom for the night.

@@BobBlaylock Afterwards, Aunt Polly shows remorse outside of the room and wants to apologize to him, but doesn't, figuring that he has to learn. As we see here, he packs some things and runs away with Huck Finn to Jackson's Island. In the book, Joe Harper joins them. Tom sneaks home and hears things about what the town thinks happened. Sid almost catches him. He returns to the island. Joe eventually gets homesick and leaves, with Huck joining him, saying, "Joe's right, Tom. This ain't no fun anymore." Tom calls them back and tells them what he did, which leads to them showing up at their funeral. Later, when Tom tells his "dream," Sid becomes suspicious.

Tom probably didn't mean to make Polly have to slap him, but what is confusing is why wasn't she proud of him like Mary was...was it because she thought he was being rebellious like his dad was and she felt loyal to his mother?
