Buddy you've done great. Excellent commentary, and for 25 yrs I'd never seen the fill broken down. Never bothered to youtube it either till just this second. Turns out I had it down pretty pat just off those years behind the steering wheel. The very last part of the fill was what I couldn't get, glad to see it. Well done!

Hey Patrick, Thanks so much, dude. I really appreciate your interest in what I do! I don't really practice every day any more but I used to get between 1 and 2 hours in a day. When I was studying for my Degree in drumming then I spent about 4 to 6 hours a day! Practicing properly is indeed an art form in itself. You REALLY need to split complicated parts up into smaller chunks which you then practice slowly until your muscles learn the movement.. Hope that helps, matey! Rob :)

Also, there is one part missing. Clearly you play it better than I can, but you'll see as time goes by there will be people that read this comment who spazzed out on Tom Sawyer drum fill details for twenty years and they won't disagree. Drummers like to nit pick details, this is just detail tweaking its no insult to your skill. The fact you learned and are teaching this to others so fast is excellence. The detail: Missing rest after a cymbal crash. A micro rest, I've heard this song literally ten thousand times and held this drum fill as my personal goal since I was 14 :) so this critique is from pure love of the fill from ear memory. I don't read music, be patient with explanation. After the tom roll part where you can either use double bass or single base for the tom roll right in the middle part, the last part of that phrase is a micro rest just after the cymbal crash and its notably hard to accentuate it in my opinion. Of course I can't do it well, which is why I like to nit pick for it :) B

@Procraseighter7 жыл бұрын
I used a quick "heel-toe" on the parts with double kick to work it in there. My bass drumming ability greatly improved once I got that skill down and I'm able to do things now that I always thought I'd need a double pedal for.

I don't want to come across a know-it-all, as I'm here trying to learn the song myself. But when performing the 4th segment, you're leaving out a 16th note worth of space between beat 2 and the and of 2. The toms should start on the "and" of 2 and you're starting them on the "e" of 2. It happens on the full solo at the beginning of the video as well as during the explanation of the the 4th segment at 19:40. The transcription is correct, as I can tap the part out with the original.

well done bro ..

Exuse my english :) on your old kit, you changed the position of your toms etc. Because you re left legged, but right handed (or the other way around). Is that still possible with the kit you ve got now?

Can I just ask, although you are a great teacher, and make everything look easy (even the Painkiller intro I watched you do a couple of days ago) I assume one needs a certain amount of experience to attempt these lessons?! @jeffreymorse60153 жыл бұрын
Not bad for a quarter of what Neil Peart uses. I play drums and I play tom sawyer and several other rush songs, you need a few more Tom's and cymbals and learn Neil's rhythm timing. Neil himself that Tom sawyer was the most exhausting to play out of all the rush songs. If you play in his beats per measure and timing, you could play it alot better. BUT for the kit you have its not bad.

He has s double bass pedal so it's the same effect. It's actually better to have one drum with a double pedal because you don't have to fuss with tuning two drums to sound exactly alike and setup and take apart is easier before and after a gig.

@tylerchambers177510 жыл бұрын
gamewizard Don't speak unless you have 2 bass drums. I do and I only take 1 to gigs. If 1 bass drum was better, Neil himself would use 1. Two bass drums gives a more true sence of drums, especially if tuned correctly.
