Staying in tune, hitting the notes, screw that, this is how you sing, give it some soul.

Funny thing is; Waits does hit the notes and stay in tune. Only like he strung his guitar with direct current.

Please just note that this song is not *by* Tom Waits, as google lists, but is a traditional gospel; here arranged by Waits and Brennan. This video touches upon that for the last 3 seconds, arguably deserves a bit more mention.

@Ron Les Steely Dan is great yes, but didnt span several decades of making music together. Solo ventures now and then before their reunion in the early 2000's with two albums a far cry from their great string of albums in the 70's imo.

This song, I Know I've Been Changed, first appeared on John Hammond's Wicked Grin, an album of Waits interpretations, with Waits singing the second verse on this cut. I'd recommend the album to any Waits fan, especially those who sometimes have a hard time with some of his raspier vocal stylings. Thanks for posting.

He's said a lot of things that imply that he's agnostic but seems to very much like the idea of religion. He once told a story about a church that took him and a friend in when the weather was shitty and they did this whole service with speaking in tongues and stuff, and he said if he went to church and was religious, he'd go to a church like that one.
