Everytime. Everywhere this song comes up my spirit just lifts. Just such a rocker (plus all the apt references to Hobbes and Christianity and everything else) and awesome refusal to accept mainstream dogmas (since this is just such a classic simple ballad I feel like it could be a total traditional song--if it is tell me), Tom Waits just knows how to take an old tradition, and just fucking sing life back into it, hard--but not with such a pointed irony as to take away from the joyful honest feels of a good song). Reviving, at least in me, new life in my paltry pity of woe, and rocking reminder that life is suffering, so quit complaining. Your concerns are too paltry to complain about. Don't make a martyr out of yourself. Come on up out of that pit. This song really is a great work of humanity from a truly underrated and gifted man. Total gem in my books. My first album I ever bought was swordfishtrombones. Since the I've heard everything. But after all the years, this one just really might be the one that gets me every time, my favorite. He just keeps seriously getting better.

I have to listen to it once a day just to keep my head above water......BTW.....I love Swordfishtrombones....

I agree! My guess is the Christianity reference is more towards some of the christians and not Christianity. The whole song is pointed at "whiners".

Well said. Very uplifting song for me as well. When it comes to the religious stuff I have to say I don't go to church on Sunday. Don't get on my knees to pray. Don't memorize the books of the bible. Got my own special way... Lol. Got my own chocolate Jesus

When he was younger he used to scream really loudly into pillows and in closets to give his voice more character. He wanted to be an old man from a young age

for everyone to know: it is actually possible to "practice" this way of singing. it takes quite some time and one gets out of practice really quickly. it is really stressfull for the stomach muscles to press so hard all the time, but that is necessary to make the vocal chords vibrate so hard. im am not really sure how smoking affacts the whole mix, because i dont, but it is definitely not the reason for him to sound this way. it is mainly technique
@callumsutherland29547 жыл бұрын
You're exactly right. It takes immense skill to control the rasp, more so than to produce it. I'll wager that the muscles in his stomach and throat are ridiculously strong.

I would love an album of Tom covering Neil Young songs and vice versa!

I’d also suggest Alison Kraus covering all Tom’s and his covering a selected few of hers.

@sclogse1 I think maybe his low growl is the opposite of using your head voice/falsetto in singing higher than your normal range. Tom's been singing this way for so many years, I imagine he paces himself in a way that he can do it for a whole long music set. I'd prefer to think that he doesn't need to smoke and rink a lot to maintain such a voice. I love smokey vocals without the tobacco smoke source. I'm sure many Waits fans will disagree, but Tom does not make me want to start smoking.

The best thing about quitting though, is now that he's quit, he can have one every now and then lol. If ya don't know the reference, search for Tom waits and Iggy pop coffee and cigarettes. Great scene. But yes, I believe you're correct. Quit around the time he got together with Kathleen Brennan, who's last name is now waits, and has a song writing credit for every song Tom has put out since they got together.

Why all the stupid comments about smoking ?this is what his voice has always sounded like it has nothing to do with smoking.have you ever heard him talk thats what it sounds like.he's not doing anything to make his voice sound like that.it is what it is.

Mate he's even talked about how it was a stylistic choice coz his uncle spoke like that, which wore on his vocal chords
