Waits is certainly one of the great shamans to arise from American ‘popular’ music. And they don’t make ‘em more unique. Here at the peak of his songwriting powers….. and can that be Marc Ribot on guitar? What a treat !!!!

We are privileged to witness genius of this caliber at work.

I fucking love this. It's perfect. It's like the entire 1980s is just standing there watching in bewildered awe, completely unable to absorb what they're seeing; and Tom has just stepped outside the entire decade and is having a lot of fun poking his head back in and scaring all the kids he left inside.

This is how it's done..... this is how music should be..... there is NO-ONE better than Waits. Marc Ribot on guitar, Greg Cohen on upright bass, Ralph Carney on sax..... it really can't get better than this. Thanks so so much for putting this up dude..... beers are on me.

I watched this when it was first broadcast, I was 18 yrs of age consumed by punk rock and had never heard of Tom Waits at the time, he completely blew me away. More Punk than Punk.

Have you seen 'Walking Spanish' from the same show? It was recorded after the show's airtime expired. It's amazing.

@@bingsinatra5283 Yup, a repeat in a compilation show brought out the complete Cemetery Polka (faded out in original broadcast) and dives into the vaults for other retrospectives have brought out more than the original two tunes. Earlier in the show, they did Frank's Wild Years, an abbreviated version in a mock bar-room setup in the studio, not on the live stage.

Tom opened up for Frank Zappa in his early years. He definitely learned a thing or two about hiring musicians who can get the job done for you. This is brilliant!

By avoiding all the 80s cliches that so many 60s and 70s artists fell into (Empire Burlesque, Dog Eat Dog), Tom Waits was able to produce some of his best music over a decade into his career. There really is a world going on underground, and Tom’s name and lyrics are probably painted all over those sewer walls.

Fantastic! The majority of the crowd turned up probably expecting Wham or Spandau Ballet or somesuch and they don't know what hit them. Still, if just a couple of them became fans as a result then it was all good. They have no idea how lucky they were to be there.

Late reply. They continued to play after the live broadcast ended. The version of Walking Spanish was nothing short of perfect.
@tumenihits54383 жыл бұрын
Another late reply - it was 1985. VCRs were still making inroads into UK households. I'll bet there's only a handful of folk who recorded it straight off the air. I was lucky enough.... The original broadcast, as received at my household, faded out and rolled end credits in Cemetery Polka. They did Frank's Wild Years earlier in the show, in a mock bar set-up, not on the live stage. Retrospective shows have broadcast the whole of Cemetery Polka and other tunes which didn't make it onto the original broadcast. Two nights before, they had played Edinburgh, Scotland, then went via Newcastle to record The Tube, and on to London for, I think, six nights at The Dominion. This pattern repeated itself in 1987, when they also did one night in Edinburgh, and a residency in London, and on the Glitter and Doom tour (2006?), when again, as I recall, Edinburgh was the only non- London show
