the subtelty of tom waits does not solely lie in the deepness of his lyrics, but mostly in the incomprehensible way they are put forward in. it seriously takes me 5 intensive listens to even understand one song, by that time you are already on one level with the guy.

Best compliment I've ever gotten was "wow, your stuff reminds me of a fusion of Tom Waits and King Crimson"... which is actually what I was channeling. But like the Beatles, I never worried about being influenced by people... because if you emulate someone very poorly, then by process of elimination, you're being original... the fact that I actually sounded like my two influences on that one song, just means I was emulating too well... I must fail at this more effectively...
