Less than a year after I discovered Tom Waits, by hearing this version of The Piano Has Been Drinking played late nights on Radio Nova Dublin. I preferred it to the Studio Version and deliberately bought Bounced Cheques to get it. Took it home, stuck it on the LP Record Player, read the sleeve notes to discover this version ............ was recorded at a venue at the end of my Road!

Superb version, IMO, far better than the others. One of the first things I heard from Mr Waits.

Best version... as the piano has actually been drunk

Seems to be the most honest and true version i have heard. Of course it sounds different, do you want it to sound the same all the time? Stagnation is not any true artists goal.

I love the piano playing on this one

I love the album version but this is even better with the new lyrical interjections. "Give us this day our daily splash" "watch me skate across an acre of linoleum." Also love the high note tinkling piano. Tom re-made a classic.

Was dr. Demento the first introduction to Tom Waits for anybody else. It was for me and it was this song. And then I found the Beautiful brilliance of Tom Waits. After this I found closing time and my life changed after listening to that album.

Definitely my favourite version of this song. The others all sound way too melodic to me :)

This was the first version of 'the piano' I ever heard so the one with melody sounds really odd to me. I love this version. where can I find it? either on cd or vinyl
@scrmngshts8 жыл бұрын
+kerriganjf You just found it. There are apps now that can restore it to near original sound. Download, share, and praise Waits.

there is no melody, on purpose

Great version. Sounds more like the late 80's tho. I saw him not perform this song in Boston, Orpheum 1986 - some asshole howled out for it between every song.

The album version is a lot happier, almost like this version is representing an alcoholic, not just a guy who enjoys drinking. Dark tune.

Doesn't sound like his other version.

Where's is the beautiful melody? Make a German laugh with boredom.

I hear that the Germans take their sense of humour very seriously.

There is no melody... because... the piano... has been... drinking....
