Videos like this are why you have one of the best survival channels on youtube that no one knows about, I learned a lot about the advantages of a tomahawk in this one, and learn a lot about video editing as well. 10/10 video, and that shelter deserves more than one video man, show us how you did it. So since an unmodified tomahawk can easily be removed from the handle do you think that simple carrying an unmodified 'hawk and a spare, shorter handle for it so that the head could be swapped between the two would take the hatchet out of the running or are there other advantages to the hatchet, as well?

Great video. There's 2 advantage points a hawk has over the hatchet 1- the handle can be replaced with any branch, anywhere, any place; 2 - The head of the hawk can be used as an Ulu knife (Inuit knife)

I recently bought myself a new rifleman Hawk and I am really enjoying it the one thing not shown here is that it has many other uses that give it a much broader advantage of a hatchet the fact the head can easily be removed makes ideal for knife work like skinning for instance Also can be lashed side ways on a separate handle as an adaze for carving out logs and the such. Don't get me wrong a hatchet is a very useful tool i have a Vaughan roofing axe a put a great edge on and have done many things with but it's wedged to a handle as where the hawk is not and as for more up close chopping you could very easily make a shorter handle or just choke up on the handle. Great video though thank you for sharing

The hatchet is just more of a refined tool, which is what he needed to make his shelter. Hammering with that long handle must get old after a while. You can cut down the handle on a hawk to whatever you like, that is the beauty of it.

I would choose the tomahawk you could always make a short handle for it and it's easy to change handles on the tomahawk, so you could have The Best of Both Worlds.

A recommendation from Canadian Prepper to visit your site. I'm glad I did, very impressed. Living in Australia and finding good local information on prepping is hard as most local stuff is presented by blokes with small man syndrome. Small 'minded' guys with big guns. Choosing to view international sites, give me a better view of the extremes of environments. As we all know, when the time comes, we won't have the luxury of picking a nice warm and cozy place to see out our time.

I do think hawks are better, but I think this experiment isn't done correctly. Obviously the longer handle hawk is going to outperform the shorter hatchet you have. With said a shorter hawk handle vs a hatchet with a longer handle would see the opposite. A proper way to do this would be to have them have repetitively the same hand length and maybe even head size. A heavier head and a longer handle obviously mean more power. But then that's when you got to think beyond how they cut and think about size and weight. You also got to take into account how heavy an axe is and how large it is. When it comes to packing in back country that smaller hatchet would be more appropriate. It's weight and size makes it better suited for travel while the larger hawk would make a good car camping tool. Of course it comes down to how much you are willing to carry and where you are going and all that. The deal breaker for me for hawks is just how simple it is to replace an handle.

It comes down to purpose. If I am going to a location an building a more solid stationary camp then the hatchet serves better for manicuring, and shaping your wood. But if it is a hike through, camping just to sleep then move on, I would take the Tomahawk. LOL that is my 2.5 Cents.

climbing around like that with an open blade is dangerous all it takes is one slip and if you land on the edge your either dead or bleeding badly.that why for myself i always put a real short string loop on the bottom of the handle and when not using i just hook it with a carabiner with a longer rope and drop to the ground and when i need it again just pull it up with the string [doesn't need to be a thick string]unhook the string and your back in business.simple and safe.scared the crap out of me watching you climbing around with that open blade be safe.

I like where this video is going, but I contend that this specific C.A.C. (compare and contrast) is leaving out a very important consideration. the hatchet used, had no wooden handle. this skews the testing as head thickness is an important factor here. The thin cheeks of the Estwing might make it a good carving hatchet, but not so well suited to the usual camp chores one finds. Another example was its historical use. the tomahawk was favored during the frontier days because of the ease of handle replacement versus the hatchets and hand axes of the time. Hanging an ax was a long and laborious task usually done at home. I still like the video because it is a good thing to C.A.C. these similar items. Just my two cents...
@nobodyspecial1152 жыл бұрын
Yeah that hatchet is more a novelty than functional. My brother has one an the weight, or lack thereof, is a big issue and the paracord handle is uncomfortable to swing after a few mins.

Estwing hatchet is probably the worst design to compare against a traditional hawk. Its all-metal construction means that the weight distribution is working against the head. Gram for gram, the Estwing will always lose.

Dont get me wrong tomahawks are really cool id say they look much cooler than the hatchets but im a hatchet guy and thats for good reason such as the facts that u can cut down thicker trees with a hatchet with less effort than u would with a tomahawk a sharp hatchet wiht a thin edge will do pretty much everything the tomahawk can do and better since it has more weight than the tomahawk u dont need to put in as much force for it to cut the same as a tomahawk however u do need to put in lots of effort for the tomahawk to cut into trees or saplings what a tomahawk will take 3 hits to cut a hatchet with thin sharp edge will take only 1 so to all those saying "but tomahawks were historically used for the majority of human time" Thats because people at the time were very poor in terms of metal so they figured as long as they make a cutting edge and a small eye to do basic tasks there is no need to waste furthermore metal to make it heavier like a hatchet due to them having little metal to work with they would use the spare metal to make other tools and to the same people who say they were historically abused by humans i say why dont they still get abused more than the hatchets?why dont we see tomahawks being used as axes anymore or hatchets anymore?So in other words a tomahawk is just a better looking worse version of an axe and a hatchet thats really what it is with a straight up honest logical opinion no bs
@rajibjoshi96477 ай бұрын
@@Dav624 good discussion frankly I don't have a tomahawk ( so how would I know? ) I have 2 hatchets ( ok for survival ) used brother's axe ( heavy full size ) but have seen the tomahawk used in India a lot by everyday people that venture into nearby woods to gather firewood for home it is very popular ( makes sense medium size easy to carry good reach good for protection against animals does basic cutting and even used as weapon in human conflict. ...deadly ) easy to craft maintain so let"s say one is more suitable in one situation they all do the basic job you could use hatchet also for self-defence ( less reach )
@Dav6247 ай бұрын
@@rajibjoshi9647 the less reach can easily be fixed with a larger handle after all you can give a tomahawk a hatchet handle length too so the reach isn't really a factor when comparing these two but yeah the tomahawk heads are much easier and cheaper to produce than hatchet heads although the problem with tomahawks is just that they can do everything a hatchet can do for just more effort because they lack weight so u will have to put extra strength to them to cut the same way a axehead will cut I never had a tomahawk before but my grandpa had a small little tomahawk smaller than my hatchet and I only have a single hatchet wich I purchased for 10 bucks it's one of those cheap stuff with plastic handles and a very thick edge of course I had to modify the edge and after making it thinner sharper it works perfectly for me I can now carve wood with it like a knife I can also split logs with it although it's a mystery steel it hasn't lost its edge or sharpness and I have a year without sharpening it after using it for almost everyday in the summer for fun bushcraft projects with wood I kinda gotten really attached with this hatchet although it's cheap it's really nice and for the price I got it for Its really performing like high quality one I'm not a fan of plastic handles but it's sturdy it's waterproof and I don't really have much vibration going to my hand from it since it's also rubberized along the end
