Those last two years of Hertl's contract when he will most likely be declining due to age are when the Sharks will be getting back into contention. Mike Grier doesnt want to be saddled with Hertl's full contract just as the Sharks ate trying to put a good team together. The timeline fits perfectly. Grier is doing a good job. Doug Wilson left him in a difficult situation with all those bad contracts.

Well said. The cap will also be higher in 4 years, so the $1.38m retained the last 2 years of his deal won’t affect the sharks much. They can get back that 2027 3rd easily

AGREED. Except it wasn’t DW that saddled Grier with Hertl’s big contract. It was Joe Will…who is still employed as Assistant GM with the team. As far as I know, Joe Will was the numbers guy while Wilson was the architect. So, many of the bad contracts that Grier has been trying to clear out were actually orchestrated by his assistant GM. Which is odd… But I agree, Grier has been improving the mess he inherited. It seemed impossible. I try not to think about the haul Hertl would’ve received a couple years ago that would’ve jumpstarted their rebuild…

@@MrVisde I think next season will be the rock bottom of this rebuild. After next season, the Sharks will gradually start to get better.

Hertl had a no move clause. That limited a lot of what Grier could do.

You guys evaluate this trade like the Sharks had any business signing or keeping Hertl. What good does he bring (besides kissing babies in the locker room) to a rebuilding team that is half a decade away from contention? What teams can possibly take on Hertl's contract? He had a no move clause as well. All of that in consideration makes this absolutely a great deal for San Jose.

The Golden Knights took on a 6 year NMC contract for an aging center who has a history of knee injuries. and they PAID to take it.

I think these two also failed to acknowledge that while yes Dan Jose has to retain, they also just freed up a ton of cap space.

Yep, basically this. Grier isn't the one that signed Hertl so he was stuck with this mess, and the interim GM that signed him promised there would be no rebuilding.. and here we are lol. Sharks had to trade Hertl and his trade value isn't as high as some people can think of. He never achieved a point per game in his career, but has 484 pts with 712 (which isn't a lot). He's also 30 years old and has several knee injuries. Vegas and Grier talked for weeks and it seemed like they were the only team that wanted to take him. At the end of the day, the retention slot means absolutely nothing to the Sharks atm. Who would they trade that has any value with a high cap hit? Grandlund at 5M? Because that's the biggest piece they can move next year, and they'd be lucky if they get a 2nd or a 3rd, except maybe if he gets another great season. And taking a bad contract for a 5th? Pretty meh, I think they could get more by taking the 6.75M they saved and actually taking bad contracts on themselves for higher picks. SJ will have 38M this offseason and there's a good chance Couture might hit LTIRetirement, so that'd be an extra 8M

That was San Jose’s last retention slot btw. I’m a die hard San Jose fan and this was truly like salt In an open wound. I’m sure there was better deals for him out there.

How does he compare to Filip Bystedt? If he has a similar projection, how do both of them fit on the same team?

Bystedt is more skilled, Edstrom is better off-puck and defensively while also being more of a slam dunk bottom six center. Bystedt could end up as high as 2nd line wing but is less NHL certain in my view. They’d honestly work decently well on a third line together. - Sebastian

This move feels like a gamble from Mike Greir to solidify the Shark's chances of drafting 1st overall this year and next year. I think that in part of the perceived return. But idk. I keep going back and forth how I feel about this trade. Return is certainly underwhelming. I like Edstrom though.

Sharks in the near future will have a lot of cap space. I don’t think that any team offered more. Sharks looking for more size and physicality.
