My entire, over 5 decades, life in Bensonhurst. I witnessed the changes we see today beginning in the late 90's but could never ever forget the weekends after leaving Jack LaLanne during the 80's under the L up and down 86th st. with the disco mirrored balls or the red horn hanging from the rear view mirror placing my beeper to the side tucking in my rope chain with a Jesus Christ head rockin a perfect DA while wearing my Tacchini velour track suit and white double strapped reebok high tops to kick dance to AEIOU on the corner on 86th & 20th in front of Bobby's bagels where McDonald's is today. Wheeeeew. All that ended in 1990. Aaahhh the good Ole days.

Yep. And neighborhood changed for the worse. Tried convincing my parents to sell and move but they don’t want to leave. Watched the decline with non Asian and non Italians moving in. Watched crime go up when mob got RICO’ed. Watched big box stores move in “Target” “Kohls” “B.J’s”. Watched Catholic grammar schools closed. It’s exactly what Tom says it is “History”. That neighborhood was a great neighborhood to grow up in.

Another fascinating video about the history of The States! The Damascus and Aleppo synagogues were particularly interesting. What exactly is that red post box-looking thing at 14:06? So many of the blocks in Bensonhurst look, just as you said, like the first suburbs. I "walked around" the neighborhood for a looong time using street view. (Which is nothing new. It's my favorite pastime.) There's so much charm and history in all those bricks! EDIT: The B roll and photography are excellent!

Tom love the videos. I grew up in the Old Neighborhood of Bensonhurst. To bad these young kids missed out. 80's/90's era the BEST you could not beat it. To bad these younger generations missed out. All the fun, learning how to be a man real young and the NEVER stopped from morning until night. Best in the country of a Neighborhood to groew up in. Plus people were able to leave there doors wide open nobody was bothering anyone let alone robbing anyone in the hurst. Sad how today's era is a dud. I should do a video yours is great but i got GEMS 💎 becasue i lived it. Love the Channel Champ 🏆 its Mint.

FYI, it's pronounced YOU-trecht, not OO-trecht. In case you're wondering how I know, I've been living in the neighborhood for over 30 years and also attended New Utrecht High School back in the day (which has this name in it as well). Also, Ocean Parkway is not in Bensonhurst. Bensonhurst ends at Bay Parkway up to 60th St., and up to 14th Ave., then down to 86th St. Below 86th St. up to the ocean is Bath Beach. East of Bay Parkway is Gravesend. Ocean Parkway spans a few neighborhoods, all of which are well outside of Bensonhurst.

Remember, one thing Benson will always be Benson. Her Bensonhurst is Brooklyn. If there was a capital it would be Bensonhurst. It is recognized by everybody in Brooklyn is no question. Son is the place to be. I know it definitely has changed, but there’s no question when it comes to saying things about memories, you can’t say as many many memories and other parts of Brooklyn as you can Ben and hers so I’m driven by that. Yes it is changed. It doesn’t suck. It’s totally different at first. I thought it sucked but it’s not it’s just different. Is the king county of Brooklyn And hope to see more many more shows. Thank you for your time. Ciao from Bensonhurst.OG
