2020 anyone? I remember the very first time I heard Tomasz's music. It was quite about 2006, when the video was uploaded. I was such a young guy... Now I'm over 30 and I appreciate his music like never before. It's jazz as it should be.

Boring is not the word I’d associate with this. It’s sombre and mellow but not boring. This song really hits the spot if you’re in one of those introspective/dreamy moods.

On a certain level, a musician's influences can be of interest. So can whether he learned from records, a neighborhood teacher or at Berklee. But in the end, all that matters is how the music sounds and does it express human truth. This music does. And it sounds great. Thanks for posting.

Variation XII is from 'Soul of things' (2002). This one on YT is very best (and christmas & live :) version of 'Suspended Variation VI' from 'Suspended Night' (2004). Btw: I love this piece, always when i listen (any version), jazzically I have tears in my eyes..

We have a good example here of the so called Christmas carol jazz played by a group of aparatchiks. In Poland they call it: "granie do kotleta".
@daegrant17 жыл бұрын
I am not sure but you might be right. No such track entitled "Little Thing Jesus" exists on "Suspended Night" (I can't imagine a different pressing exists in the US, say). Given the group's improvisatory bent, it's difficult saying which particular improvisation a live performance is or is based on

Great playing, but no excuse ending it (at 8:43), cutting him off before he finishes the last note, and before the audience applauds. Video needs at least another 10 seconds.

Now that's more honest and well thought-out. The 'wannabe' thing rubbed me the wrong way; I don't think he wants to be anyone but himself. Really, I'd say your complaint stems from a more general trend in jazz: Everybody's starting to sound the same, with a few notable exceptions (eg. Meldhau). The tradition of learning from records engrains the same sounds into every player's mind, so everyone ends up with the same influences. Don't knock Stanko Quartet, knock the existing jazz pedagogy.

I did not suggest that. It looks like my comment got a -4. He is a good pianist; better in other recordings. I am a jazz pianist myself and must say again that his solo here is very commonplace. It is a boring and overdone vamp. If you guys wanna experience intensity in solo piano playing you should check Hancock, Jarrett, Corea and Brad Melhdau. I like Stanko Quartet in some occasions. Not on this one though
@fredheart1116 жыл бұрын

I don' see how the piano solo is incredibly intense. It is a Herbie Hancock "wannabe" kind of solo without herbie's vitality
